Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

Thanks for the reply, I'm 99% sure that I'm going to wait for a resolution, I don't need to buy it just now and if it turns out to be a hardware issue then it will be more difficult to fix than if it's a software or firmware problem.

My additional display has a built in 4 port USB hub which I connect to my MBP. I was previously running another unpowered 4 port USB hub which I used to connect my MIDI controller and one Steinberg dongle. This unpowered hub was connected to one of the ports on my external display. Since I rearranged my USB devices and removed the additional unpowered USB hub I haven't experienced anymore freezes at logon. Hopefully that was the cause of the freezing (atleast for me). I'll report back if it happens again with the new configuration.

Apple either doesn't read the forums, doesn't care about their customers or won't have a fix for a while and doesn't want to give refunds. I bet on the last one. With 600 posts over 40 pages Artitron has started one of the most popular threads. It is astonishing there is silence from Apple. I can't imagine how a company can launch a product that stops working for 9 minutes every so often and the company doesn't even let the customers know they are working on a fix. Windows, cars, televisions, vacuum cleaners. If it doesn't work the company acknowledges it and makes good. It reminds me of Russia in the old days when things went wrong they pretended everything was fine for the longest time. It means Apple are losing sales from people who read the Internet forums and worse they are getting a bad reputation and will lose the trust of their customers.

Found this topic yesterday, same problem here, 17" i5 though.
I've probably suffered 4 or 5 crashes since receiving the computer on April 27th, each time I've been using the internet.
On depressing the power button, I get a flash on screen, made me jump the first time I saw it ! On reboot I'm returned directly to the page I was viewing.

Also getting an occasional screen glitch, thought I was imagining it at first but it's definitely there.

Dear Apple. I have money set aside for a new i7. But I'll be DAMNED if I'm gonna spend a dime until this issue is 100% fixed. Like he11 I'll spend $5k, and have it be down for a flippin' minute.

I have exactly the same problem as you guys

Is it only in Windows (using bootcamp) that your maschines is freezing or is it also in the mac OS?

I have seen many freeze in win7 but not in mac yet. (I haven't used Mac OS on my MBP 15" i5 so much yet, maybe therefore i haven't seen freezes in here).

A fool/sucker and his/her money are EASILY parted. I can assure you that Apple and it's "charismatic leader/head salesman JOBS" know this. If you look back over the last few iterations, there is ALWAYS a problem (wifi, Bluetooth, Hard Drive stalls, video distortion, etc, etc, etc) that ALWAYS follows a new release of the MBP. I would know because I own several, and I constantly cruise these "self-help" support boards.

It's time to accept the fact that Apple IS the new Microsoft, and could not give a care in the world about YOU the customer, as far as whether their product works as advertised. They do NOT use real Quality Assurance departments. Even Jobs has stated that the customer will be the Q/A(guinea pig), and so far he has exercised this belief perfectly.

In addition, what does NOT help is when idiotic users buy these machines, and see the problems from the beginning, YET, REFUSE to send them back!!! They will troubleshoot until the cows come home, in order to not have to admit that they got screwed over by Apple for a new machine.

It's a fact, and bound to get worse as Apple grows larger...MARK MY WORDS....

You wanna really be heard?? Send these PIECES OF CRAP BACK, and demand a refund, as that is the ONLY WAY Apple will hear you over the cash registers/credit card machines...KA-CHING KA-CHING!!!!

Holy cow man calm down, these are complex devices that will have problems and are extremely hard to fully test. This thread has proven that we cannot reproduce this issue at will, try diagnosing that. Also Apple has shown (also in thread) that they are willing to work with replace/repair these units as well.
There is no evil empire - not Microsoft 10 years ago, Apple today or google tomorrow; they are companies looking to be profitable

    End of story

I still haven't experienced a freeze at logon since the new USB devices configuration (and latest osx beta).

I was thinking of purchasing a Macbook Pro 13". After hearing from all of you about the problems with these machines, I will definitely wait. I thank all of you for the information.

Even though my old 17" PowerBook is hanging on by a thread, I'm delaying as long as possible.

I've had very good success with turning off "Put the hard disks to sleep whenever possible". Granted, it might not help with your battery use time but i have not had a single crash since. This was happening within the Mac OS X. I have boot camp installed with Windows 7 and never had a crash. Granted I always turn off putting the hard drives to sleep.

Why don't some of you give it a try and report back with results.

    anyone?

    10.6.4 is out.

Cross your fingers (but don't hold your breath).
