Jun 27, 2010 9:20 AM in response to Artitronby jgcamil,Well, had to chip in this topic too.
The computer crashed big time. I´ve been having the same freezes as most of you are experiencing. I was getting the freezes every 3 days or so, most commonly when using VLC over HDMI output.
However, the story got worse as one day, after starting the MBP instead of the login window, I was received with a graphically corrupted image, with only the cursor functioning. Couldnt log on or anything. After a safe boot, I was able to log in normally but still, doing a normal boot got me the same graphic corrupted screen.
Had to reinstall everything from scratch after a 3 hr talk with AppleCare.
Now, the screen frezzes only around 15 secs once and everything works ok again.
Im pretty ****** of a the issue here. -
Jun 27, 2010 9:45 AM in response to Artitronby JimboJumble,Ok, not sure if this will help anyone, but thought I might post anyway.
I've been following this thread as I was a bit concerned about how hot my Macbook Pro was running (15inch Core i7) but it has never frozen. I play games, make music, watch videos etc.
I bought mine exactly three weeks ago, at the beginning of June. Now, I've noticed that these problems are from May. I wonder if Apple HAS fixed this issue and that it was simply a problem with the hardware batch.
For those who have had replacements recently, has the same thing happened? -
Jun 27, 2010 3:12 PM in response to JimboJumbleby califfo1975,not sure that this might be true: we tried to assess this some pages before but it was without success as the sensitivity to freezing did not appear to be correlated to a certain HW or SW configuration or manufacturing date...Hopefully Apple will talk about this one day. In my case, I received it on MAy 6th and had only one freezing never reoccurring (touching wood..)

Jun 27, 2010 3:23 PM in response to Artitronby Raphael-Mac,Well, count me in for having problems.
15" 2.66 ghz, 2x 4gb, high res anti glare. with a intel 25-m SSD 160gb.
Froze after importing around 30.000 photos from my external harddrive into iPhoto. Had to do a hard reboot.
Then put the import on again and went to bed. In the morning I could not login, I had the black screen (where your normally get the login field) with the spinning balloon. Again had to do a hard reset.
Just got the notebook in 3 or 4 days again. Ordered it May 31st.
If I need to give more details give me a shout.
I'm calling Apple in the morning to discuss this issue, wondering what they'll tell me. Also noticed my adapter get's really really hot, so suppose I'll have to switch that in the apple store. -
Jun 27, 2010 11:59 PM in response to Artitronby Soheil Zahedi,Add me to the list of the afflicted...
Mine froze with the black screen twice tonight while watching eyeTV. I am connected to an external LCD via the dp to dvi adapter. I can easily reproduce the problem with eyeTV in full screen mode, by hitting the <tab> key (which normally switches between full screen, and stretched full screen modes. Same symptoms as the others: mouse initially active, black screen, no way to get out without a hard power down (didn't wait 15 minutes...).
I have the following repeating over and over 100's of times in my console (All Messages) log starting right around when the problem first occurred:

Jun 28, 2010 1:57 AM in response to Artitronby Morten A,I too bought a MBP 13" - and is very frustrated with it's performance;
- Very slow and thus delayed panning and multitouch zooming in iPhoto when editing photos.
- Pixelmator (photo app) crashes far too often (6 -7 times in a month now) and plagued by "beach ball"-interruptions even more frequently, though last mentioned don't quit the app.
- Mail, Safari, Pages and Keynote-apps have had the same interruptions. In Pages and Keynote the dropouts seemed to have a connection to using Inspector. It puzzles me, as Keynote and (especially) Pages/textediting isn't or shouldn't be a performance-killer.
Anyone had the same problems? -
Jun 28, 2010 6:42 AM in response to Artitronby mgcharlie, please, if you want apple to look at this problem, report the freezes on this link:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html
this is a user to user forum and apple seems to not read it. -
Jun 29, 2010 2:45 AM in response to Soheil Zahediby Rod Hagen,Have you contacted Elgato to see what they have to say about your own problem, Soheil? Certainly sounds like a probable bug in their software.
Cheers

Jun 29, 2010 6:34 AM in response to Artitronby Mauricio N.,It's been a while since I last replied to this thread, so let me provide a few updates regarding my machine.
I shipped my MBP to an Apple authorized service provider on June 2nd, and it's still there for repairs. They tested the system on a daily basis, and managed to reproduce the issue, but couldn't diagnose the root cause.
Today, I had a call from one of the technicians, who told me that after running a newly-developed hardware diagnostics tool, the log entries this tool generated were sent to some Apple staff in Cupertino, who replied that the logic board should be replaced. So, according to the guy from this AASP where I sent my machine, a replacement logic board was ordered last friday, and should arrive in the next days. If that solves the problem (and I cannot imagine why it wouldn't), I'll let you know.
Just to reiterate, the freezes I experienced are EXACTLY as Artitron's. People have been reporting many variations of this problem (frequent beachballs, graphics corruption, etc.), so, just to make it clearer. -
Jun 29, 2010 9:24 AM in response to Artitronby abrandt1,Hi all,
I just bought my 17" i7 two weeks ago. Experiencing these freezing problems, unresponsive mouse/keyboard, and spinning color wheel. At this point, my i7 has slower performance than my old Dell 6200.
I have only had to do a power cycle (holding the power button for 10+ seconds) once. Other times I just let the Mac "catch up" with the processes.
Here's what I am having difficulty with: when I am experiencing performance issues, I will open the Activity Monitor but NOTHING is registering as an issue. Everything looks to be underutilized. Anyone else seeing this anomaly?? Also, opening a simple utility application like Activity Monitor takes 20 seconds to load.
I have re-imaged my machine 4 times!!!! Not only that but it is such a pain having to migrate my data over (100GB) every time I re-image. I recently backed-up using Time Machine because I was getting tired of migrating my data over and over again. I then had to do a full restore from this backup using Time Machine. After restoring from Time Machine, performance problems have magnified.
I also have Fusion and have a pretty vanilla VM for work-purposes. Well, when I run my VM, it also magnifies the problem 2 times over. Incredibly slow, unresponsive machine. Color pinwheel, black screen, hanging. Tried opening up PowerPoint in my VM and it is so painfully slow.
I'm at a loss here.
Anyone have advice, thoughts on the right process to resolve this?? Can I just return this machine? Exchange it? Is it better to just go into the store?
This is not a very good experience as a first time Mac user however I do not want to give up quite yet. -

Your symptoms could simply be the symptoms of lack of RAM. Try to sort processes in Activity Monitor on memory usage and also watch the amount of free memory.
How much RAM do you have? I used to have a late 2008 MBP 15" with 4GB RAM, and that's simply not enough for running Fusion together with a couple of Mac programs. I had similar symptoms to what you describe. In fact, my main motivation for exchanging it for an i7 was the ability to install 8GB RAM (the 2008 MBP supports up to 6GB).
My i7 with 8GB RAM is (except for some rare hiccups, see earlier this thread) a wondefully fast machine and Fusion runs so smooth that I often forget I have it running in the background. -
Jun 29, 2010 12:54 PM in response to Artitronby SKEL_73,Just throwing my 2C in, I've jsut had my 4th unexpected total system crash (grey screen, you must restart ect.)

Jun 29, 2010 1:57 PM in response to Artitronby Artitron,To prevent further dilution of the original issue, I am going to mark this thread as solved. I have had my replacement Mac Book Pro for over a month with no issues in normal use. To be clear, the original complaint was that of seemingly random hard freezes on the March 2010 released Mac Book Pros. If you are experiencing delays, beachballs, system crashes (Grey Screen of Death), or even system crashes with graphical corruption - you are likely experiencing a separate issue and should seek remediation elsewhere - specifically Apple Technical Support.
Therefore, the solution for this issue has two steps:
1. Report that your Mac Book Pro (2010) freezes to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html
2. Contact Apple Technical Support to request support and replacement hardware via http://www.apple.com/support/contact/

Jun 29, 2010 1:58 PM in response to Artitronby esoterica,To update, AppleCare escalated my issue (exactly the same as Aritron's) to engineering. AppleCare emailed me a utility called "Capture Data" that appears to capture various System Profiler and logfile information, which I ran on three different occasions after hard freezes.
After a week AppleCare finally got back to me and told me that the only thing they could offer was for me to do another clean install of my OS (which I've already done once), this time onto an external hard disk, and to boot from that drive and install no other software and use my computer until it freezes again, and to run the Capture Data application again.
This is so ludicrous on so many levels I don't know where to begin. Nevermind the fact that I have exactly the same software installed on my 13" Core2 Duo MacBook Pro and it's never frozen once, nevermind the fact that there's really nothing for me to use my 17" MacBook for if I don't have any application software installed on it; they're basically asking me to be a unpaid tester on their brand new $2700 computer for the ~3 days until it freezes again.
Please, everyone who is having this issue, call AppleCare and report it. Feel free to reference my case number 165274457 to let your particular rep know that the issue you are having is not isolated, and perhaps they will figure out that this is an issue that they need to address internally. -
