Jul 1, 2010 9:26 AM in response to daniel.brownby Vylain,Freezes on startup happened to me a couple of times too.
But it always happened after another freeze so I am guessing that the GPU was not cold enough even on startup.
Anyway, I am not saying that overheating is the only reason to the problem, but I am saying that it is probably one part of the problem (the GPU being another part of problem).
People that can switch to Intel HD both reduce the heat and remove NVidia's GPU from the equation...
I also noticed that I had a few minor issues with Airport, like activating it after deactivating was not possible unless I reboot.
Twice, I lost my internet connection through Airport just before a freeze.
I had a couple of freezes this morning so I increased the fan speed to 5000RPM.
Seems to work now, but I'll keep you posted. -
Jul 1, 2010 2:22 PM in response to jgmdeanby Genzeb,I am having the same issue. I got my Macbook Pro i7 15" w/ SSD 256MB three weeks ago. I've had to hard restart it about a dozen times. What happens is that if MBP goes to sleep mode or screen saver starts while it's busy doing something, then it it never recovers from sleep/screen-saver. I get the "checking password" with spinner indefinitely. I will try upgrading to 10.6.4 but this is a disaster. I can't even use it out of fear that it may crash on me in the middle of some work. -
Jul 1, 2010 8:45 PM in response to Artitronby Christian McDonald,What is the status on the freezing issue? How widespread is it? This thread is what is holding me back from placing my order. -
Jul 2, 2010 12:11 AM in response to Christian McDonaldby dc202,If you can, I would wait a couple of months or when you see problems like this not being posted by a lot of people. I have been a Mac user for a long time and have followed product revisions. It is not unusual for Apple to have issues with new or revised product lines. Let others do the field testing, then you can buy with more peace of mind. -
Jul 5, 2010 3:18 PM in response to Artitronby SKEL_73,Just wanted to mention that since I have installed gfxCardStatus, and stayed with the Intel graphics, I have not had a single system failure (about 6 days now). This leads me to believe that graphics switching is at play. I will post if I have a crash. -
Jul 5, 2010 3:25 PM in response to Vylainby Vylain,I have now returned my new 13" macbook last week and am currently waiting for its replacement.
I never experienced any freezes with the minimum fan speed set to 5000RPM.
I'll keep you posted if I experience any other freezing issue with the new one. -
Jul 5, 2010 6:49 PM in response to SKEL_73by Kevin MacLeod,Same here, no freeze yet on Intel only, and I will report back as well...Apple could/should add the ability to turn off NVIDIA graphics in 10.6.5. Would be trivial as it is apparently just a switch hidden under the hood that the gfxCardStatus author discovered and uses. Thanks to the gfxCardStatus author for making his app and making it free and opensource though! Thank you!!! Apple hire this guy! -
Jul 6, 2010 3:41 PM in response to Kevin MacLeodby SKEL_73,OK - I'm disappointed to report that although I have been using gfxCardStatus to keep my machine running on only one graphics card (Intel) I have had another catastrophic crash with the grey screen etc.

Jul 6, 2010 9:21 PM in response to Artitronby jgmdean,I'm now a week and a half since getting my MBP 17" 2.66GHz main logic board replaced. I have (touch wood) experienced no more weirdness, no freezes, no beach balls, no gray screens, no resume freezes - and I had all of those at one time or another. Same system disk and same use model - gfxstatus 1.75 and mostly locked to Intel. According to the Apple Tech I spoke to, my MBP failed some "diagnostic" which is why the board was replaced. He said he wasn't permitted to elaborate further, but it's obviously an internal-only tool, as my MBP passed the User diagnostic ("d" key on install disk).
So I'm left to theorize that there's a bad batch of "something" on the IO side of the early i5 and i7 systems. That's about as useful as saying there's "something" glitching in my car's wheels. (shrug) But there you are.
I'm just glad to have my MacBook back to its expected workhorse self. The Apple store was extremely co-operative with my schedule: I took my MBP back after diagnosis as I could live with the glitching as opposed to not having it as I had to travel that week. The next weekend (after iPhone 4 launch!) they confirmed they had the part, dropped the MBP off on Friday lunchtime and got it back Saturday evening. This kind of service is half the reason I bought the MBP in the first place. To those who don't live near an Apple store: You have my sympathy.
To those contemplating a purchase: It looks like us early adopters took the bullet for you, and Apple seems to be willing to make it right if you are extremely unlucky. You know what to do if you've read this far! So I'd advise you buy with confidence. YMMV if you don't live within a reasonable travel time of an Apple store.

Jul 7, 2010 2:46 AM in response to Artitronby dvasa,hi guys, i've read every single post in this thread form when it started.
i bought my MBP i7 15i about 2 and a half weeks ago and have been using it heavily with 3D applications, Adobe apps and no gfxcardstatus
i didn't want to state this too soon because, well, it was too soon
i reckon there could be an issue in previous hardware and they're trying to find a way to resolve it with firmware update rather than having to replace all the machines - this is why i think it's taking so long
then again i could be talking cr*p and my machine could freeze today -
Jul 7, 2010 6:18 AM in response to dvasaby SKEL_73,I just wanted to add, as a few people have said it could be an issue with earlier manufactured versions of the hardware -- mine is a custom-built machine that arrived hot off the press 2 weeks ago.
I really hope I don't have to deal with getting the logic board replaced but I'm starting to have a feeling that's where my situation is headed. -
Jul 7, 2010 12:18 PM in response to jgmdeanby MattDaft,So the problem is the main logic board hardware ? Everybody have to go on a Apple Store to get a replacement ?
Why some people say that they don't have the problem with previous version of MacOS X ? -
Jul 7, 2010 12:39 PM in response to Artitronby du9207,how can this topic be "answered"??? People are still having problems like crazy and there seems to be no clear way of making this "freeze" go away, officially. It seems that a fanboy just got upset with so many people trashing apple on this for not responding and could not handle his precious Apple being trashed. the only way this can be marked as answered is if people can fix this problem with the "solution" 99.9% of the time.
Seriously, people have spent over $1k on their machine and this thread in no way helps them fix the freeze problem. -
Jul 7, 2010 1:22 PM in response to du9207by Artitron,Well, that marks the very first time I have been ever been called an Apple fanboy. I don't care if people are upset with Apple - they should be. What I do care about is helping people who come to this thread understand that there best course of action is to actively engage Apple to get the problem resolved.
That is why I will repost the "solution" that serves this thread as best it can.
I really wish there was an "Unhelpful" button on these forums... -
Jul 7, 2010 1:22 PM in response to Artitronby Artitron,If you are just coming to this thread, your quickest path to resolution is to report your issue to Apple to raise visibility for anyone experiencing this issue and the engage technical support to help you troubleshoot your specific hardware.
This thread has become a bit unwieldy and hard to read. If you have the time to read it there has been some good comments, ideas, investigation, and summarization by a number of people. Unfortunately, there is no immediate root cause or definitive fix to report.
If you are having this freezing issue with your new MacBook Pro (2010), please consider doing the following:
1. Report that your Mac Book Pro (2010) freezes to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html
2. Contact Apple Technical Support to request support, troubleshooting, and replacement hardware via http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
