Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

I had 4 good days and then another sudden system failure.

Here's the log, for the record.

I have a 13" MacBook Pro, 2010 model that does this as well. Every once in a while it just locks up. If I'm listening to audio it'll repeat a very small portion of what ever I'm listening to, much like a record skipping but very quickly. I haven't noticed anything in the logs. I'm also battling with my system not waking after I've locked it using keychain access.

My 2.53 i5 MBP also freeze randomly, even when i didn't touch it.
but luckily the beach ball only lasted for 5-15 seconds.
but sometimes it took longer than that. i haven't had the freeze that needed to hard reset.
    i have some news though.
i downloaded the liquidmac application (http://uri.cat/software/LiquidMac/) and found out that "maybe" the accelerometer in my MBPis not working properly.
when i put the MBP in my table, it supposed to be flat, but the balls keeps hanging to the left

maybe it has something to do with the HDD clicking so many times..

this is a completely different problem you have. It has been stated many many many times that this thread does not deal with beach ball freezes. It looks like you need to create a new thread.

hopefully the beachball freeze won't become a total freeze..
but the worst thing that could happen when i'm using my MBP in a club (i'm a dj), what would happen if the MBP crashed? wouldn't be a good thing afterall..

and i don't see any strong reason to start a new thread since it's only a waste of space..
sharing information is good, especially when the issue is not that far related, after all, it is a MacBook Pro 2010 freeze..

    please, si mbo

keep with the new ideas. In the beginning I had two freezes as described by the OP, but nowadays my MBP freezes exactly like yours. The only difference is that mine doesn't show the beach ball. I plan to use my macbook on live performances too and I'm afraid the thing will completely freeze on the wrong hour.

    SKEL_73,

not sure if posting crash reports here helps. there's no one from apple reading.

I guess you might be right. Sometimes there are forum participants who do understand crash reports and have ideas. But no luck so far - so I guess I'll stop.

I was having the same grey / garbled screen when my MBP 15" i7 switched from NVIDIA to the Intel display chip. It was reproducible all the time that switching would occur. Either by unplugging the external display or by simply forcing it using gfxCardStatus.

In my case I found a helpful instruction to check the loaded kernel extensions using:
    kextstat | grep -v com.apple

That showed two Avatron extensions that got installed alongside the Air Display software that I used to extend display using my iPad. I just uninstalled those extensions by using the Air Display uninstaller and my problem was solved!

I hope that checking installed kernel extensions help others as it did to me.

    Good luck to all.

sure, this is what this forum's used for..
i've managed to using my MBP for 3 hours in studio, and it freezes about 10 times, but luckily the sound still coming out. everything stopped except the sound..
still haven't got the courage to take it to a live gig, which is the reason why i'm buying this MBP for..

when you're switching the graphic cards using gfxCardStatus, did the screen flick or something?
my MBP screen kinda had this little white flash for a split of seconds..

Unfortunately, there's a bug in Snow Leopard's automatic graphics switching that causes this issue in certain circumstances. All of the following have to be true to trigger the problem:

    1. You're on a 2010 MBP i5 or i7, the 15" or 17" model.
    2. You're on Snow Leopard.
    3. Automatic Graphics Switching is turned on.
    4. You've installed the kernel extension for any virtual frame buffer (such as Air Display, DisplayLink, iDisplay, or ScreenRecycler).
    5. You have the system configured to use an external display as the Main Monitor.
    6. That external display is not connected.

If you change any of these factors, the problem goes away.

The latest installer for our Air Display drivers turns off Automatic Graphics Switching as a workaround for the issue. But the real fix will have to come from Apple. We've reported the bug, and it was flagged as a duplicate of something that Apple Engineering is actively working on. Let's hope they fix it soon!

Nice list of conditions but actually the Macbook Pro 2010 video freeze problem is not limited to such limited circumstances.

Got a W8 factory Macbook Pro 15" core i7. Horrible freezing all the time -- seems to be video related. A lot of freezing on flash video, sometimes hard crash. I can't run iMovie (using the iSight camera) without triggering several multi-second freezes with a hard freeze (no recovery) after three or four mini freezes.

Previous to this I had tried reinstalling (w reformat) the OS and run the hardware diagnostic short and long versions. Came up clean.

Took it to Apple store yesterday. They could reproduce it. I got an RMA to return to Apple for a fix.

Seems this is a serious and widespread problem. It happened only a couple times the first month I had this thing, and it has accelerated wildly in the last couple weeks. Typical time between crashes is anywhere from 5 min to 15 min to 2 hours, max.

Apple had a previous incident where they needed to recall and replace Nvidia parts due to a faulty packaging problem. Given the accelerating nature of the problem this is quite possibly an explanation here as well.

gmarinov, I sure hope Apple reads these threads. We are working for them for FREE. I mean if they don't utilized very useful posts such as SKEL_73's that would just be stupid. They would lose free labor, literally. Posts here hopefully will help Apple fix this quicker. I will post a log next time I get a crash. Although interestingly since getting my replacement a month ago I've only seen two crashes, one coming out of sleep and one doing Google StreetView with iTunes playing music in the background I believe. I'd think if there is even one, something is wrong. But the screen on this replacement is so nice I don't want to return it if this is caused by software/drivers! So I'll hang on to it unless I get a 3rd crash. Xcrosses fingersX
