Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

Based on past experience posting videos on Youtube attracts Apple's attention.

Six months of notifying Apple about Bluetooth problems with Leopard and Snow Leopard were apparently ignored.

However, once I and others posted Youtube videos and notified Apple of their presence, ip addresses from Apple started appearing in the viewership lists.

    You can notify Apple here:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html

You can use iMovie 09 to post your youtube videos.

    Good luck.

I have been holding off on buying a laptop until this problem gets fixed.

me too, exact same problem, i.e. freezes right up and only way out is to hold down power button for a few seconds until the machine switches off, then start again.

Happens at least 2 -3 times per day so is very frustrating

Next time I will try and leave it in a frozen state for 10" ands see if it comes right

    Q. Am I harming the machine by holding down the power button to get out of a frozen screen 2 or 3 times a day?

No need to worry about harming your machine's hardware. The operating system on the other hand might not fade as well. Although there are protections in place in the filesystem, it could happen that a hard reset results in data loss or coruption. However these chances are slim, especially if you are using a journaling filesystem.

It would be good if the press would learn about this. The iphone 4 bug with the antenna losing signal once it's touched at a certain spot, received a lot of media exposure when the press reported about it and Apple had to act.

I find this bug that we are talking about here much worse because it literally stops the Macbook Pro from working completely.

I switched off the automatic graphic switching. Will see if it makes a difference. My hypothesis for the bug: The graphic chip switches off and the nvidia doesn't switch itself on because there is not need to.

thanks for response, Jeroen. That puts my mind at ease a little bit. I'd really like to get some suggestions re the freezing, its rendering my MBP basically inoperable. I'm an ex PC user and it looks like I might have to go back. Dissapointing huh?

    Cheers mate

    Same dude...

Well I will be going to Apple store Regent Street and demand to speak to the manager...

Genius or no Genius. There is some weird fault with these i7 MBP's

And I don't stop for no one in finding the answer... I did NOT give Steve Jobs £1600 for nothing......................... and I mean that.

This is going to get sorted, anyone else want to meet me there? around 4pm ?

Having something similar here, just trying to populate the thread with more info. I have the i5 and had auto-switching turned off, and got similar results. Here are the kind of relevant parts of the crash report:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHDGraphics(6.1.6)@0x5b4f7000->0x5b5a3fff
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6)@0x5358e000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.1)@0x5acdd000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.1)@0x5b5b3000

I feel like it has something to do with Flash player, but who knows. It's been GSoD every time, twice in the last 4 days.

One more macbook pro 15" i7 user with the same problem. What's worse is mine is the test case for adoption by the 120 + people at my company. Went to the apple store genius bar and had to explain to the guy that samba was not a third party package that i installed , that it comes with the os and is how file sharing is done (Since the smb service is one of the many apps that this behavior happens on).

Will try escalating but if any tips are found would be grateful.

I have exactly the same problem. Kernel panic. My debug info is exactly like yours. I post here, is possible that Apple can look the backtrace. I think if the process that causes the panic is WebKitPluginHost and the backtrace includes de module com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHDGraphic could be something related to the graphics card.

My laptop if a Macbook Pro 2010 , MacOS X 10.6.4, *with one monitor attached* to the mini-dvi port. Always the kernel panic has happened with the monitor attached. I don't have any strange kernel module loaded. After searching in google, I always have seen the same stack backtrace and if the stack is allways the same address at top.

Someone here suggested that someone should film one of the system crashes and put it on Youtube, so that's what I did. Happened this morning. My 14th sudden total system crash in 3 weeks.

This is my Macbook Pro Core i7 with 8Gigs RAM:

I don't think this is the same problem. Everyone here is posting about system crashes or Gray Screens of Death. In those cases, the whole thing just restarts or freezes and forces you to restart.

Your issue sounds more hardware-related, though. Maybe take it to the Genius Bar or a local mac repair shop and see what they can do for you?

    Good luck!
