Aug 19, 2010 10:28 AM in response to du9207by mkivsuptt,I thought it was working for me yesterday, but this morning, it happened again. So not fixed for me. -
Aug 20, 2010 12:39 PM in response to Artitronby daniel.brown,I'm on my 3rd laptop now - each one was replaced DOA. It's a video issue, as others have surmised. I can reproduce the problem more easily under Win7 (in the Aero Video Performance tuning window). I'm going to run Win7 in 'best video performance' mode for awhile and see if that's better. Mine always freezes when expanding or minimizing windows, so maybe that's a workaround until an updated video or firmware update fixes the issue. -
Aug 20, 2010 6:35 PM in response to Artitronby pip-in,I have had 2 freezes in 5 months that require a hard reset. I use an external monitor, watch videos etc. I see more beach ball slow downs but a bit of patience gets me past it.
I add this only as more data to the problem, in my opinion this is not a systemic problem but maybe one of some Quality control.
I have recently changed to boot into 64 bit (defaults to 32 bit) have many tried this ? -
Aug 20, 2010 11:20 PM in response to Artitronby mutebird,Just got a 15inch MBP with hires screen and 7200RPM 500gb HD.
I was just playing around with it and familiarizing myself with the OS when it froze on me. I was like "huh? are you serious? I'm not even running anything"
Very upsetting to see that others have this problem. Why can't they fix it? -

welcome to "it just works"
hopefully an update will soon fix this -
Aug 21, 2010 11:24 AM in response to mutebirdby GoTVols,If you just purchased it from the Apple Store just go back to the store with it and tell them your unhappiness with it and either get your money back or get a replacement. -
Aug 21, 2010 11:38 AM in response to Artitronby TonyElTigre,Mine freezes as well. To add to this very long thread, I feel it has to do with going from full screen to windowed mode on many video players online. I think it may have to do with the Intel card.
Mine freezes and I get no mouse arrow, just a hard freeze. Then my arrow comes back, then goes away. The menu bar and dock disappear. In about 1-5 minutes, everything comes back as if it never happened.
This occurs at least once when I'm switching video from full screen back to windowed. On a related note, going to full screen causes the video to white screen which causes a stutter. I think this Intel card is pretty crappy. -
Aug 21, 2010 8:52 PM in response to GoTVolsby mutebird, but why should the replacement not freeze?
And shouldn't I be able to take it back to the store for an exchange any time? I am under the 1 year warranty included with it for a year... right? -
Aug 22, 2010 8:43 AM in response to Artitronby caren7,I recently purchased online from Apple Website in France, a 15" Macbook Pro, 2,53 GHZ, with hard drive built to order of 500 GB at 7200 rpm. Since I got it, and it frequently displays the appearance of a rainbow colored rotating disk and it freezes for seconds often for minutes. There must be something wrong because, it is a new Mac, and it freezes while I am working with simple applications like itunes, safari, skype, yahoo messenger, microsoft word. I know it is a sign of overload, but overload of what exactly! Even I do not yet have my data transferred to it from my old PC and it has been doing that from the beginning and before I installed any further applications or programs. I am currently in the Middle East, and I took it for checkup here but I was told that nothing is wrong. This is unacceptable and I am sure this is a sign that something is wrong. I paid 2000 euros for this laptop and now it is almost 3 months old, and I do not accept that my laptop remain unfixed or unexchnaged for another one, until the warranty expires. This is frustrating. What am I to do? Thank you in advance for your cooperation. -
Aug 24, 2010 12:23 PM in response to Artitronby dengstroem,This is so ridiculous. Paying a huge amount of money for what? Have had these problems with my computer since I bought in February and I´m so dissapointed. The update didn´t help me and I have tried to switch off the graphic switching as well. Regret that I stayed with Apple when there were a lot of computers out there, that actually are doing what you would expect. -
Aug 25, 2010 10:31 AM in response to dengstroemby John Transue,I sure hope they fix this eventually, there's already a thread about it happening on machines that run from the newest to those made in 2008 at least:

Aug 25, 2010 3:37 PM in response to Markus Weldonby Markus Weldon,Well after applying the update i can confirm i still get the freezing issue...
This really needs to be fixed/addressed by Apple officially, this thread alone is huge and i see little to no input from Apple. It appears they are too busy dividing their attention to fixing any smart phone issues that arise these days... -
Aug 26, 2010 7:00 AM in response to Markus Weldonby korey2007,I'm a first time Macbook user and I'm having the same "freezing" issue. As soon as I turn my computer on after several minutes the whole system freezes and I cannot do anything. After restarting the computer, the same issue keeps occuring. I've called apple and they simply had me update the software but the freezing continues. I plan on bringing the laptop back and if they do not replace or fix it, I'm asking for a refund. I did not pay $1600 for this nonsense.
Although I do have to say when the system is running without error; I absolutely love the Macbook. But if this is a problem that will continue to arise I simply don't want to put up with it. -
Aug 26, 2010 7:28 AM in response to korey2007by jgmdean,Take it back and ask for a replacement, explaining you've been unlucky to receive an "intermittently freezing" unit. Reference this discussion thread if required. Done politely and in-store Apple usually does the right thing. Ask nicely if they can transfer your data to the replacement machine if you have data already on your new machine. Returns are one of the most powerful things any of us can do to ensure visibility of this issue because they're expensive.
Uncommonly high parts stocking for affected models at my local Apple store suggest this is already a known QA issue.
Either way: condolences on joining the select unlucky club!

Aug 26, 2010 10:16 AM in response to jgmdeanby skychief77,I like the idea of ensuring visibility on this issue. And hey, look at that, the Wikipedia entry on the iPhone 4 has a section on technical problems like the antenna. I think we have an issue here too, but it doesn't appear in Wikipedia yet. Anyone who wants to add something to a Wikipedia entry? You can very well make a reference to this thread then.
