Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

well it talks about THIS problem that we have NOT something "similar"

if it does, the OP should consider revising his "answer" which did nothing to fix the problem

    EDIT:
one other thing. What about 13" Macbook pros?
mine froze on me ONCE, the second day I bought it. It has never froze since. I wonder if this will install on the 13" also

    Hello all,

My apologies if this is in the wrong thread or if this has been answered already. I'm new to the Mac world!

I recently purchased a 13" CTO MBP on August 20th and I've had it physically since August 24. Today (8/26) my 2-day old MBP froze. I freaked out. It was 1800 smackers and I'd transferred my entire digital life into it. I rebooted manually and recharged it thinking it was a battery problem. 4 hours later, I return, turn it on and less than 5 min later it freezes again. I reboot again. Whenever I finish rebooting, my brightness and volume are both on max and any data I was working on post-reboot is gone. Could anyone please tell me what could possibly be wrong? I called apple and they said they would send me a replacement but first I need to return this computer. How long do replacements take? Are they brand new? I asked the woman on the line and she said it would be brand new and CTO but I want to be sure. If I'm going to be w/o computer for 1+ week (I'm assuming that's how long it will take) I want to be sure I'm getting something new, not something that looks new or has some new parts.

Thanks for the help! I hope I didn't give too much information; I've been browsing these forums and it seems the more information the better!

Well the graphics update didn't stop the "freezing issue" hoping the
    firmware update just released will.

A few things: 1.) This happened to me on Mac OSX and Windows 7 on the new 13" macbook pro's. I'm new to the Mac OSX, so I focused on troubleshooting the same problem in Windows 7.

2.) I noticed that no one is posting why they think it is graphics related, and also no one is posting what kind of audio chip/card they are running or the audio driver version.

3.) I found a website at: http://technicallyeasy.net/2009/03/fix-audiodgexe-high-cpu-usage/ Tried the solution since it matched what I have been experiencing.

4.) My MacBook Pro is now fixed in Windows 7! It no longer locks up or hangs because audiodg.exe is taking all of the CPU power.

5.) Anyone know where the audio drivers are for OSX? I'm betting the 'enhanced audio' driver is causing the same problem.

Interesting, I have a 15" mid 2010 (about a month old), and the firmware update after download says is not supported by my system. Why?

Interesting indeed. "All" is apparently not inclusive of my 17" i7 mid 2010 MBP either. Doesn't show up in Software Update, and a manual attempt says it doesn't apply to my hardware. My MBP was bought back near release day, but is on it's 2nd main logic board replaced 2 weeks ago. The firmware revision is listed as identical, except for the last digit. The update is a "C", mine's an "A". I'm seriously thinking there is more than one revision of the hardware out there now...

First thing that is totally different after the update is the fans..
They are responding more rapidly on temperature changes.

    I had a 15" mbp and the lockups/freezes.
Exchanged it with a 17" mbp and ran Fan controll ever since and no lockups.

After the update, disabled Fan Controll and to my suprise i have lower temperatures compared to the situation without the update and fancontroll.

Seems like temperature issue's to me, but thats my 10cts

same here, I have *A, while the update is *C. Claims not to be supported by my system.

This laptop wouldn't be stable if it it wasn't for the gFXCardStatus. Without it, it would hard freeze every few minute of me doing something.

Wait a second, some i7s are 6,1? Mine is 6,2. How many 6,* are there?

    I think MacbookPro6,1 is the 17" and MacbookPro6,2 is the 15". I am not sure, that's according to everymac.com

    I have the 17"
