Horizontal lines on iphone screen

Hi everyone,
About a month ago, a crack appeared on my iphone screen. I didn't drop it or anything so I have no idea how the crack appeared. The touch screen works fine though. Today, I noticed two horizontal lines on the bottom of the screen. Now there are about five lines. So far, everything still works but I'm starting to get worried. I'm afraid that the screen will stop working. Anyone else know anything about this issue. Is it something to be really concerned about? Thanks!

That sounds like a good idea. One question though, why do you say a crack appeared? What makes you think it was a crack, since you don't have a crack in the glass? You could try the user troubleshooting to see if that corrects it, if it is a software issue. However, if it is a problem where the digitizer/LCD is failing, then it wouldn't correct it. First is to power off/on the phone, if no joy, then a reset, by holding the home and power button together until you see the Apple logo ignoring the slide to power off screen. If that doesn't help, then a restore through iTunes, first from a backup and if that doesn't work, then as a new phone. See what happens, or you can make an appointment at the Genius Bar online at http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar. You need an appointment before you go.

A crack in the glass screen can cause uneven pressures on the digitizer, and thus can cause a failure. This is evidenced by the fact you are experiencing problems with the screen at this time. I would recommend that you see about replacement of the screen. While the warranty will not fix the screen, you can see about an out of warranty replacement which will run you $199+tax. If that does not suit you, you can look at searching for a 3rd party shop that replaces them at costs lower than the OOW replacement.

Hmm, I just assumed it was cracked because that's what it looks like. I thought the screen was cracked at first until I realized that the glass was still smooth. The "crack" can't be seen when the screen is asleep, just when it's on. Same with the horizontal lines. I tried everything you suggested to no avail.

Oh well, tomorrow I'll call the Apple store. Thanks for everything!

I recently had the same thing happen to my iPhone. First generation phone - had it for about 2.5 years. Works fine, but last weekend noticed two little horizontal lines right in the middle of the display. They are always there no matter what I'm viewing (home page, email, apps). Phone still works fine, but the little lines are annoying. I noticed too each day they get a little longer as well. I tried a shut down as well as a reset. Neither worked. Its definitely not with my screen - its with the display. Its as if the pixels in this line are stuck on 50% gray or something - because you can see it whether the screen is white or black.

I would love to fix this as I'm not exactly ready to upgrade to a new phone. Any suggestions?

There is a webapp that you can link to that will cycle all of the colors of the pixels for the screen. If there are "stuck" pixels, it will normally fix them, however if there are dead pixels, there is nothing that can be done. The webapp is called Pixel Fix and you can find it in the webapp area of the Apple website. See if that helps.

If they are dead pixels, the only option is to either look for a 3rd party repair facility in your area to replace the screen, look at an OOW replacement, or look at a new phone. If you can hold off a little longer, we may see any announcement about a new phone. No guarantees though.

That's the weirdest thing - they aren't dead pixels, because each day the two lines move a bit to the left. They seem to be growing slightly too in length. . . but I'm sure the pixels where the lines originally started are now working.

I didn't find the app "Pixel Fix" - I found one called "Fix-a-Pixel" - is that the correct one?

I'm thinking the same thing you were Chris - I may just upgrade the phone, but I'm hoping they will announce a new one the beginning of June. The phone still works, so its not terrible, just very annoying.
