New phone=crap signal

I recently had to replace my 1st generation Iphone, so I scooped a 3GS. I work up at a mountain resort. I also have to go over an occasionally sketchy mountain pass en route to work. My NEWER,SWEETER,FASTER Iphone doesn't get ANY reception up at the resort and gets no reception for the riskiest parts of my commute, a 10 mile stretch. My 1st gen phone was money for 2.5 years, great reception all over the mountain and it only dropped calls in one spot going over the pass. Even the work Nokia flip phone gets full bars up at the resort. Is this an Iphone thing or an AT&T thing? I miss my old phone's reliability!!!!!!

Problems with signal can originate for any number of reasons. It could be a software issue, a hardware issue, or a SIM issue. Standard user troubleshooting for the iPhone includes powering the phone off/on. If that doesn't help, then you may reset the phone by holding the power and home buttons down together until you see the Apple logo and then releasing, ignoring the slide to power off screen. If that does not help, then you can try a restore through iTunes, first from a backup, and if no good, then as a new phone or not from a backup. Signal issues can also originate from the SIM, and you can go to AT&T and request a replacement SIM to see if that helps. AT&T also has an app in the App store called Mark the Spot. It allows users to notify AT&T of signal issues and they will generally respond to that.

See if any of these suggestions will help. If not, you can make an appointment at the Genius Bar at http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar. They can examine the hardware to see if there is a problem there.

Actually, I won't upgrade to iPhone until Apple opens up their phone to Verizon. AT&T has horrible signals in my area. In addition, I still have a good amount of a 2-year contract w/ Verizon. Why in the heck did Apple choose AT&T?!?!

Apple initially tried to deal with Verizon.

And why won't they let other carriers support their phone?!?!

AT&T is the only US carrier that is compatible with current iPhones.

Verizon uses CDMA, so Apple would have to develop a special phone for them, but Verizon is in the process of going away from CDMA, so that development would be for a phone with a very limited market (one carrier, and for only a short time).

T-Mobile uses GSM, so the iPhone would work, but T-Mobile uses non-standard 3G frequencies, so speed and some functions would be limited. Some of the new Canadian carriers also use those 3G frequencies, so Apple could add the frequencies to the iPhone (that would be a lot easier than adding CDMA), but those carriers lave limited coverage, so again, the market would not be very large.

In a few years, when Verizon has finished its conversion, things may change.

Well, as much as I enjoy my iPhone, intelligent consumers need to make the purchase of their cellular devices based first on the service they receive in their area. While you have issues with AT&T service, when I first purchased my iPhone, Verizon had terrible service here. They have since installed a tower in our area and their service has improved, however AT&T has installed 2 or 3, and almost a year ago turned on 3G service as well. Since AT&T has excellent service here, that makes my decision easy....iPhone.

As an earlier post stated, there are a number of reasons that Apple would decide not to change at this point, and I don't intend on debating all of that now. It is a business decision on Apple's part and they are the only one that decides that.

Since Verizon provides you with acceptable service where you live versus AT&T, your decision should seem easy as well. Good luck.
