Q: Setting up a Scanner

I have two All-In-One Machines on two different wireless networks and had no problem setting up the printers. But, being very new to the Mac (one week), I have no idea how to set up the scanners in them. I used the help function and it said I can either see the scanner (I can't) or set it up like I did the printer. This is not helpful to me as I still can't figure it out.
I have downloaded the printer, scan and the fax software for my Canon 8350 Cdn, but I really don't know what to do to set up the scanner. Any ideas of what I am missing?

I am guessing it is simple, but being so new to the mac I don't know what to do.

I am using the Canon 8350 through the time machine and connected by cat 5 cable, but, no problems with printing at all, just don't know how to set up the scanner.

The other is an HP M2727 through a linksys wireless connected by cat 5 cable.

All the software you need should be included in /Library/Printers. Downloading new software was probably unnecessary. First look in /Applications or Applications/Utilities to see if you already have scan software installed. Then you might go to System Preferences > Print & Fax > Scan and try choosing it that way.

With regards to the Canon MF8350Cdn, the Canon web site shows that you need to have the application ScanGear v1.20 installed. This will allow you to use Image Capture, which is built in to Mac OS X 10.6, to scan from the document feeder or platen glass. This is not included with 10.6 so you will have to download it if you have not done so already.

With the ScanGear v1.20 installed, the next step would be to add the scanner part of the MF8350. If the device was USB, this is done by opening Print & Fax, clicking + to add a printer and selecting the MF entry that displays as a scanner in the Default view. In the case of a networked MF, I am not sure how you would add this as a scanner. It is possible that it advertises itself on your network as a Bonjour Scanner, in which case it would also appear in the Default browser view. If you don't see it then let me know and I can check with my MF4380dn at work.

Once the scanner has been added to Print & Fax, I would expect that you then have to set the AIO to the scanner mode. With my MF4380dn, which uses the same version of ScanGear as your MF8350, to scan from the copier I have to place the document in the feeder or on the glass and then press the Scan button. This shows Network Scan on the display. If I wanted to scan via USB (which is usually how I have it configured) I have to press the Scan button again so that USB Scan is displayed. I would expect that your MF8350 has a similar function and that you would need to select Network Scan.

With Network Scan set in the MF8350, you can then open Image Capture and you should have the copier showing as one of the devices in the list. You should then be able to select it and then press the Scan button within the application.

I have also noticed that the ScanGear v1.20 adds an application called MF ScanGear. This looks like a similar application to the one the inkjets use and lets you pre-configure actions in response to certain selections, such as scan to file or scan to email. I haven't actually used this application since installing ScanGear (I mainly scan from my MP980 or LiDE 200) so I will have to get back to you about how it all works.

Hope this is enough information for you to get started for now. I will get back to you tomorrow after I get a chance to check the network side of scanning with the MF series.

Ok, so I installed the scan software I downloaded. I think I already did that, but I did it again. I also changed my scanner to connect USB through the time machine and it instantly found it. I pressed the scan button on the scanner and attempted to install.

    I have two options:
    Canon MF8300 Series
    Canon MF83400 Series (FAX)
    Both are Bonjour.
It seems to me there should be a third option of scan.
When I choose Canon MF8300 Series I have two printer driver options:
    Canon MF8300 Series FAX (US)
Canon MF8300 Series UFRII LT (US)

I am not sure what I am doing next!

Now I am home trying to set up the scanner on my HP M2727.
Same thing as the Canon at work. Clearly this is just something I am missing.
Both work fine with the PC's I have, and both print fine with the MBP.
It must be something very simple that I don't know how to do to set up the scanner.
    Any ideas?

As another option. Is there a very high quality color scanner with a fast feeder like the Canon 8350 that Is known to work with my OS? I can just use my all-in-one to print and copy and then get a separate scanner.
I don't mind spending money. Actually, not being able to scan into my computer is very frustrating for me. I have figured out most of my other stuff on the mac, but scanning is a must for me.

Done a bit more searching around and found the following about using the Canon MF8350Cdn as a scanner. Note that I can only find info about using it via USB - I will have to keep looking for network scanning information but it could be similar. Note also that this may not work when the scanner is connected to the USB port of the Airport. I suggest to connect directly to your Mac to see if you can get it working. If it does, then you could try the USB connection to the Airport - although I think this will impact your ability to print with the UFR driver.

    *On the Mac*
    1. Open Applications > Canon MF Utilities > MF Toolbox
    2. With MF Toolbox shown in the menu bar, click on Scanner and ensure the MF8300 series is shown with a tick next to it
    3. Press the Save icon. This will provide you with the settings to scan with.

    Now you can start scanning.

    *On the MF8350Cdn*

    1. Place document on the platen or ADF (depending on the settings made within the Save menu of MF Toolbox)
    2. Press the Scan button
    3. Select Computer and press OK
    4. Scroll down to the setting you configured in the Save menu, for example "Color: Save" and press OK

This will open a progress window within MF Toolbox. Once the document is scanned it will be saved to your selected file, by default your Pictures folder in your home folder with the date as a parent folder.

Can you try this and let me know how you go. In the meantime I will try and find information about using the network connection for scanning.

Okay, found the answer to network scanning and it is not supported - only scanning via USB is supported and this may have to be via a direct connection rather than via the USB port of your Airport router.

With regards to the previous usage information, I wasted my time searching the web. The ScanGear v1.20 DMG includes a Documentation folder and inside is the ScanGear user guide. This details that only USB scanning is supported and explains the steps to scan using the keys on the copier's operation panel or the MF Toolbox utility.

Thank you very much. That worked. You made my day.
It would be nice to be able to connect through the time capsule with USB or ethernet, but at least I have a scanner working.
Now I have to figure out how to get multiple page documents into one document. My first setup scanned a document into separate files for each page. Probably an easy fix so I will play with the settings.

    Thanks again.

I thought that if you scanned the pages using the PDF setting, rather than Save and using a image type such as JPG, then you would get a single PDF file with multiple pages. This is how it works on our Canon imageRUNNER copiers. But in testing with my MF4380dn, each page is saved as a separate PDF. Checking the MF Toolbox settings, I could not find a setting that lets you select to save the PDF as individual files or as one file, so it appears that this cannot be done from the machine.

However, you can manually combine the PDFs using Preview. If you open one PDF in Preview with the Sidebar displayed you can then drag the next page/s from the scanned folder within Finder to the Sidebar of Preview. You can then save this as a new file.

When I used the Canon MF 8350 cdn with my pc I used Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 and would click on "scan" and scan the documents that way. It would go into one document.
I wonder if get Adobe 9 if I can scan in a similar manner with the mac.
    Anyone have any idea?
I scan files in my office once I close them and then average 100 pages or so, but sometimes can be thousands. Having each page a different file won't cut it.
But, at least I go the scanner to work.
I still have two pc's, so If I have to I can scan the large files with those.

Just tested again using Acrobat Pro 9.3.2 and was able to scan all pages as a single PDF file
