iTunes purchased songs format

Hello,

Are the AAC songs purchased from iTunes encoded using a Variable Bit Rate (VBR), or a Constant Bit Rate (CBR)?

There doesn't seem to be a direct indication of this in the music file information. Is there a way to see if a file has been encoded using one or the other bit rate?

Thank you!

As far as I know, Purchased AAC files from the iTunes store are at 256kbps CBR. When you view the bitrate of Purchased AAC's in iTunes it says "256kbps" so I'm assuming it's just CBR. It's a bit confusing though since in Import CD Settings, the "iTunes Plus" AAC encoding is actually 256kbps VBR for CD's, however I don't think that's the case for music downloaded through the store.

Yes. Look at the Bit Rate column in your library. (If Bit Rate is not visible, enable it by going to View > View Options and checking the box.) Files encoded with VBR will be so indicated, and files without the indication are CBR.

All the songs purchased from the iTunes Store recently are AAC/256 CBR.
