I am very new to itunes. I purchased an ipod classic, spent a whole week downlooding music from my cd collection as well as purchasing from itunes. I was very impressed with myself,I manage to create playlists and sync my touch. Tonight however, I go to open itunes and get asked to download a later version which I do. I have now gone into itunes and every single playlist, my purchased list etc have GONE GONE GONE....help someone please, this is driving me crazy. I had at least 3,500 songs and was just going to start downloading my last batch of cd's, I purchased four Jamie Callum cd's from itunes store before agreeing on the new version download.....please tell me it's retreivable................

Yeah, all of your media files should still be there. I think it just failed to load your library file (which contains all of the locations of your files so iTunes can "read" them).

Hold SHIFT when opening iTunes, and a popup should appear asking for a library. Select "choose library" or something like that. Go into your default iTunes location (by default, this should be ...Music/iTunes unless you made it something different) and find the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder. Open that, and find the most recent one. It should actually be dated with the date you updated to 9.1.1. Select that library. Open that and hopefully everything should be fine?

I hope this helps? Let me know if this worked.

Hi again: Well the first part of your advice made sense but we could never find our 700 songs in any file includng the Previous iTunes Library Folder which only had a few refrences to music we had loaded but we couldn't do anything with it and no progress in getting our our full iTunes library back. Meanwhile our iPod synched and it lost most everything too. There must be some way to get our music back. Ideas, please.....

Well, are the music files themselves still on your computer?

By default, they reside in the iTunes/iTunes Media/ folder, and then under their specific category (music, movies, etc.). Worst comes to worst, simply load up iTunes, go to FILE -> ADD FOLDER TO LIBRARY and select the "iTunes Media" folder which is located where I mentioned before. When you select that folder, any media missing from iTunes that resides on your computer will get added to the library.

If for some reason the music files are completely GONE (which I don't see why they would unless someone deleted them or there was a bad error with your hard drive, but still unlikely) then there isn't really any way to get the media back unless you have it on an iPod or other device.

However, I still think your music files are on your computer somewhere, and just need to be re-added to the iTunes library

Thank you for your reply, I did that and have found the music in the library, how do I get this back into my folders (don't know if this makes sense), but I want to get the playlists (music) back into my itunes folders where they were before to enable me to sync and add to my ipod nano and to add my purchased stuff

I'm guessing your terminology is a bit off cause I'm still a bit confused.
Ok, so you added the music back into iTunes right? You can see it all sitting there when you open iTunes.

I'm not sure what "folder" you're referring too. If you're talking about making sure iTunes has put all of your music in the proper media folder, it should have done so already. If not you can double check Preferences, Advanced, and make sure the checkbox for let iTunes manage media is there. If its checked, you don't need to worry about where it stores the files.

If you're talking about your PLAYLISTS and PLAYLIST FOLDERS that appear on the left side of the iTunes window, if you lost them, it's possible they were a part of a different iTunes library file.

The easiest way would be to simply remake the playlists, but if you absolutely cannot, you CAN load older iTunes Library files (in case you have problems with your current one.) To do this, hold down SHIFT while opening iTunes. Select "Choose Library" and browse into your iTunes directory .../iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries. Look in there for the most recently dated Previous library and load that. Your library should appear like it used to. If you need to re-add any music to it, you can do so with the method you did before.

    Am I getting this right?

Barging in, it is probably the Vaio media software that has been erasing itunes libraries world-wide for almost 2 years.
Get the latest update from Sony.

There are hundreds of posts here on apple discussions about this; if you care to search on "vaio", you will see them.
