"Backspace" is actually "Delete" on a Mac. It is located right where you normally think of Backspace to be located. "Delete" will delete the character to the left of the cursor. If you hold the Fn key and press Delete, it will delete the character to the right of the cursor (forward delete).
The cloverleaf symbol is just the command symbol. It has been used on Macs for a long time. It makes it easier to show the shortcuts in menus. Apple began printing "command" on the keys a while ago too to make it more understandable.
