DVD Disk won't play or eject

My MacBook was working OK until I was asked to update the Superdrive Firmware Update 3.0 which I did. But after that the drive does not work - cannot play DVD and cannot eject. When I go into Applications and chose DVD Player, I got this error message "There was an intialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]" What does this mean?

I tried these:
(1) Press the eject button (at top right hand corner of keyboard)
(2) Rebooted and pressed eject button
(3) Rebooted and pressed TrackPad
(4) Connect a mouse and rebooted and pressed the left mouse key.

Can anyone please help? Thanks.

Thanks Jay for your suggestions and interest in my predicament.
I had tried all the various suggestions but still the DVD won't eject.
The problem also is that the MacBook does not recognise the existence of the drive.

When I opened Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal and type "drutil eject -drive internal eject -drive internal", it responded saying there was no drive. Also, there is no icon on the desktop.

What else can I do?

How far away are you from an Apple Store with a Genius Bar? Your optical drive may well be done for. If none of the tricks in that link work for you, and the drive doesn't recognize a disc at all, you probably need service.

One last thing you can try is tricky, and you may want to use two people, and it's a little dangerous. That would be to try booting your MacBook, holding down the trackpad, suspended in the air with the slot-loading drive pointing down, hoping gravity will do the trick.

Good luck!

Just to let everyone know what happens.

I took the MacBook to Mac1 for checking and it was determined that the DVD drive was 'cooked'. They replaced it and it was still not booting. They found that the board was also 'cooked'. How it happened I do not know. It was a write-off. Anyway, it was still under 2 year extended warranty. The insurance decided to give me a new MacBook Pro. I was without the MacBook for more than 3 weeks ... but it was worth it. I am so happy.
