newbie question about ipod touch and windows xp requirements

I'm thinking about getting the 3rd gen ipod and have some questions about the requirements. Any input/answers appreciated.

1) Do I need to open an iTunes account to use the iPod touch? I don't plan on purchasing any music/video/apps. I'm only going to be using it to check email once in awhile/surf the web and just music.

2) My Windows XP only has Service Pack 2 (can't download Service Pack3) and I don't have USB 2.0 (just the 1.0). Will it still work?

3) Should I wait until the iPhone OS 4 comes out on the ipod touch? Anyone know exactly when that's happening?

4) Is it possible to transfer music without using itunes? (drag and drop like most mp3 players)

Thanks everyone.

1. You do not need any account to use the iPod or iTunes, but you will need iTunes to sync anything to the iPod including music and mail.

2. The system requirements are:
*PC requirements*

PC with USB 2.0 port
Windows Vista or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
iTunes 9 or later

So the answer to this question is, "No."

3. No need to wait for OS 4.0. No one knows when it will be released. When it is you will be able to upgrade the iPod.

4. No, you cannot transfer to or from the iPod by drag and drop. The iPod is one-way meaning you can transfer to it via iTunes, but cannot transfer from the iPod. For that you will need to purchase a third-party utility.
