Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one of more of the steps listed below:

1. Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including a different USB port directly on the computer.
2. Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
3. Try a different USB 30-pin dock connector cable.
4. Eliminate third-party security software conflicts by following iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software:

5. There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your Registry. If your default packet size is set incorrectly it can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance.
6. Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
7. Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

Hi, I faced the same issue yesterday.
Firstly, open iTunes and Conect your iPhone cord to your computer, but DO NOT plug it into your iPhone.
Secondly, then press and hold the home button on your phone while conecting the iPhone cord into your iPhone.
Thirdly, continue to hold down the home button. You should see a picture showing cable, arrow pointing to iTunes on phone screen.
Then click restore in iTunes.

You could always force a fresh install of the OS software file. You can delete the one you currently have so when you plug into iTunes for the restore, it will have to contact the Apple server and download a fresh one, instead of using the one you curently have.

Not really sure which version of Windows you have on that Compaq computer you list, however in Vista, you can locate the ipsw file by going to c:\users\(your username)\appdata\Roaming\apple comupter\itunes\iphone software updates. There should be one file in there, that is the latest firmware.

Delete that file and connect to iTunes. Start the restore and it will connec to Apple to download the latest version.

See if that helps, at the same time you worry about virus software disabled and testing different USB ports.
