How do I rotate an iPad image

What I do is open the picture in iOS photo viewer. Then rotate orintation and take a snapshot as needed.
It is fairly odd that you need a 3rd party app to do this, as you might expect it to be a not uncommon need. If you haven't used it, it's one of the features of Photoshop Express, which has a number of other simple, often useful, photo retouch tools.
With iOS 5 later in the year you should be able to do it directly in the Photos app (I'm assuming that it's not just for photos taken with it) - from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Crop, rotate, enhance, and remove red-eye without leaving the Photos app.
This is a perplexing addition to the discussions on rotation of images within the Photos.app on iPads. It is part of a screen grab from within Photos showing that image 10 of 94 is on the screen and the usual options of Slideshow, mail and delete are available. What is peculiar (to say the least) is that there is a mystery rotate icon as well. I say mystery because like every user who has responded to AppleGUI's original question, I had been firmly of the belief that it was impossible to rotate a photo within the Photos app.
Some more details: original iPad; photo imported from a camera card; icon only began appearing after installing (and using) Photo Express last weekend. The rotate icon does not appear for all photos, but when it does, the darn thing works (in a flash, I might add). All I can say is that like others, I will welcome with open arms ios 5 and its promised Photos improvements.
THIS IS NOW INCLUDED IN iOS ............. MAY 2012
In "Photos" (the large flower icon)
bring up any photo
look at the TOP RIGHT for the edit button
look at the BOTTOM for the ROTATE button.
Look for SAVE at the top left.
All done. The issue is resolved.
Thanks, Apple !
