This works
I've done this on multiple friends' and family members' routers, and it works to resolve their iPad and iPhone wifi problems.
The most important thing is to change your router's Beacon Interval to 50, instead of 100. This helps it maintain a constant connection. The setting is found under Advanced Wireless settings in your router config. It may also help (especially with speed problems) to adjust the fragment length and RTS threshold down by about 40 from their default values (to somewhere around 2304-2307). My current RTS is 2307, and frag length 2304.
I KNOW that many of you will complain that this isn't a fix, but only a workaround. You're totally right. The iPad should work with any typical router without having to do any advanced configuration. But it seems that in many cases, it doesn't. If thats the case for you, try these new settings until Apple sees fit to change something in their firmware.
This is how my router has been configured for over a year (long before I got my iPad), because I was having the same problems with my iPhone 3GS. Since making these adjustments, I've had no problems, and none with my iPad since I got it on day 1. Also, this has dealt with the problems of a number of friends and family members who were having trouble with their ipads on their home networks. Now the problems have for the most part vanished.
Even though its not a true fix - try it if your ipad is having trouble maintaining a solid connection to your home router!! The most important one is the Beacon interval. It seems that the iPad has trouble with some routers if the beacon is only set to 100ms. Change it to 50 (more frequent), and it maintains a much more stable connection.
