Q: How might I retrieve data from an old Powerbook 1400cs???

It is "loaded" with RAM. Has no ethernet card or PCMCIA ethernet card, floppy drive doesn't work, all I have is a modem card, and it won't stay signed on to dial up for more than a minute or two. Is there a housing that the drive would work in, that was USB or Firewire connectable? I really just want my old mail, photos and a few documents off this computer, but have no idea how to get them. I coud probably get the wholke drive on a DVD, if I could get it out of there somehow.

MacBook Pro 15" (built week 52 of 2009), Mac OS X (10.6.2)

    Hi,

If the PowerBook 1400cs is working (that is, if you can see the Desktop and access documents on the hard drive), then a CompactFlash memory card placed in a PC Card adapter for CompactFlash (such as this example) could be a good solution for transfers (use a suitable card reader with the other computer).

If the 1400cs is not working, you could remove the hard drive and place it in an appropriate USB or FireWire hard drive enclosure (there are also "case-less" USB adapters, complete with power supply). The computer contains a 2.5" ATA hard drive.
