Connecting music keyboards to computer

I have an iMac running 10.6. I have two music keyboards. One of them should connect with a MIDI cable to a USB port on the back of the computer. This is a Casio model CTK-601 and has MIDI input and output ports. They are round connecters with 5 pins in each plug. My other keyboard is new and is connected with a USB cable.

(1) Will I have to get two MIDI cables (one input, one output) just to play the keyboard with my computer? Do all MIDI cables have a round end?

(2) I've noticed that my new keyboard (the one with the direct USB connection) plays only when I am in Garage Band. Is there a way to make the keyboard sound without going into Garage Band. I find Garage Band difficult to understand and intimidating to use.

(3) I would rather use the Casio since it has a lot more "bells and whistles" on it compared to the newer keyboard.

(3) Is there a tutorial available about how to set all this up? I saw nothing about MIDI devices in the Missing Manual.

My goal is to be able just to sit down and play these keyboards over my computer speakers.

GB does not support MIDI out, so you just need one to the MIDI interface:

yes

Is there a way to make the keyboard sound without going into Garage Band.

no, you have a controller, controllers don't make any sound they play a synth (in this case, GB)

I find Garage Band difficult to understand and intimidating to use.

there shouldn't be anything difficult, create a brand new project and you're ready to play a piano, nothing else to do.

I would rather use the Casio since it has a lot more "bells and whistles" on it compared to the newer keyboard.

depending one what those "bells" are, they may or may not do anything for you with GB (you can't record your keyboard's sound across a MIDI connection)

if it's a Mac Compatible keyboard, or interface, there's not much to set up:
