Apple has free wi-fi access at their retail stores, so you should try there to see if the same occurs. The reason this is relevant is because if the same does not occur when connected to another wi-fi network or networks, this will be a strong indication there is something amiss with your wireless network or wireless router.
Changing encryption to WPA2 for your wireless network is a good thing regardless, especially with a Windows PC. WPA2 is much more secure than WEP.
Is your wireless router a dual-band router - the ability to have an "n" network and a separate b/g network for computers or devices without an "n" compatible wireless card?
