startup comands not working

my iMac no longer accepts any commands during start-up.

I was specifically trying to run a hardware test from the cd but it kept on booting to the desktop.

tried to do target disc mode but that didn't work either.
The only ?way I was able to install the OS was to use start up disc.

any ideas?

Hi jlakser49

It depends on the original OS X that came on that iMac?

If it shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.4 or earlier the AHT is on Install Disk 1, but if it shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.5 or later the AHT is on Install Disk 2.

See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

Also if your using a wireless keyboard and it is no longer paired with your computer because of the HD work that you mention in your other thread, then you will need to use a wired keyboard to reinstall the OS X or run the AHT.
