Canon SD780 Camera not detected

Canon SD780 Camera not detected

I have recently switched over from a PC to a MacBook. I am trying to upload my pictures onto my computer. I currently have a Canon SD780 Power Shot Camera. When I plug it into the USB area it tells me "Camera not Detected." I have tried downloading the Canon software, opening iPhoto, Image capture etc. Perhaps my camera is not compatible with the MacBook? Is there anything I can do to get my pictures on the computer?

What version of OS X are you running? There are 3 OS versions available at Canon and just making sure you installed the right one.
Is your camera set in Playaback mode? It says that in the manual.

Is the camera turned "ON"?

I use a USB card reader to get my pictures on the computer.

I have a similar problem with my Canon SD 770. I installed the CameraWindow software from the CD, and when I plug in the camera, the software opens and soon shows me a message "Failed do Initialize Program".

Also, I see there are three different CameraWindow's. There is the DC and +DC as well, and none of them work. Any clue on that?

Is there any other way to download the pictures?

The majority of the time, just plug in the camera into the Mac and turning on the camera starts iPhoto and asks if you care to download your photos. I have never had a card reader and I have never had to use the camera manufacturer's software.

I agree with the other posts - you do not need any software (unless it has special features you want to use) to get pictures to your Mac. As another poster stated, I use a USB card reader and it works like a charm. Immediately after plugging it in, I get an icon "Canon" on my desktop (because I have "import into iPhoto" unchecked. Not using the camera saves battery life. I prefer looking at the pictures on my desktop (Preview should automatically open when you double click a pic) and then deciding what to do with it - run it through one or more of several applications I use (iPhoto is not one of them) to enhance, crop, or whatever, or actually just trash it if it didn't come out the way I expected.
