photos don't load when I want to change desktop photo in SystemsPreferences

When I try to change the Desktop photo, I go to Systems Preferences then click Desktop & Screensaver.
The words "Loading Photos" appear in the bigger box and "iphoto albums" appears in the leftside column under the word "Apple". But the photos NEVER load. This problem started recently. Please advise.
