Replacing the flex cable connecting trackpad/keyboard to motherboard?

I have a 2008 model Macbook Pro (15.4-inch: 2.5GHz
(MB134LL/A)) and the trackpad and keyboard intermittently like to lock up on me. After researching the problem here I have come to the conclusion that the problem is the flex cable connecting the trackpad to the motherboard found underneath the battery.

This laptop is out of warranty and no applecare so I'm sure if I brought it to the Apple Store it would cost me $300+ to fix. I brought it to a 3rd party authorized repair place and they said it would cost $200 and I would need a whole new top case. The guy also told me you cannot replace that flex cable, you have to replace the entire top case.

My question, is that true? Do I have to replace the whole top case? If not can anyone point me to a good tutorial on replacing just the cable in question?

*TL;DR - How do you replace the trackpad flex cable on a 2008 model Macbook Pro?*

I took my 2008 model Macbook Pro 15in into the Apple store last summer for a couple of different problems, they sent it off and one of the things that they replaced was the flex cable. So it can be done. Luckily mine was under warranty, so no charge. Of course I have no idea how to do it, just wanted to let you know that it can be done because it was done to mine.
