Sending mai from iPad results in "This message has no content"

Hi. I'm using an iPad 3G against a POP3/SMTP e-mail account. Mail seemed to be working fine for the first few days, but now whenever I compose and send a message, it's failing to send the body of the message.

The message looks fine until I tap the "Send" button. If I look at it in the Outbox before it gets sent, it says "this message has no content". After it goes out, I can see it in the Sent folder, but the list says "this message has no content" and the detail view shows the correct recipients and subject, but where the body should appear it says "this message has no content" for new messages or "This message cannot be displayed because of the way it it formatted. Ask the sender to send it again using a different format or email program. multipart/alternative"

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Andrew

I am having the same problem with an IMAP/SMTP account. It was a GMail account, I switched it to using the GMail auto setup and haven't had any issues.

But under the standard IMAP/SMTP setting almost 1/3 of all messages were showing no content.

Though I don't recall exactly - I think most of them were sent while I was on 3G, and it otherwise works fine on WiFi.

Sure this is a related problem, yesterday got the iPad and always bcc myself on messages I send from various devices - yesterday the emails would go to the recipients and I could only read them on my iPhone and NOT on the iPad.

message has no content - 'This message cannot be displayed because of the way it is formatted. Ask the sender to send it again using a different format or email program. multipart/alternative.'

Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem with POP3 e-mail but found that my gmail (an IMAP account) worked fine.

Both accounts were sync'd from my iMac. One thing I noticed is that on both the iMac and iPad the outgoing POP3 mail server (SMTP) was set to none. On the iMac this hasn't caused any problems but I wondered if it was an issue for the iPad.

iPad Mail had a list of outgoing SMTP server addresses in the secondary server section but they were all disabled. I enabled the one for my POP3 account and the problem with the no "content messages" was fixed for the next e-mail I sent.

So I'd suggest trying the following:

1. Go to Settings and select the Mail, Contacts, Calendar item.
2. Select your POP3 mail Account.
3. Scroll down to the Outgoing Mail Server Section (it might be obscured by the keyboard)
4. Select it to bring up the next screen.
5. You'll probably see that the Primary Server is Not Configured. But look to see if your POP3 server is listed in the Other SMTP Severs section. If it is just enable it.
6. If no POP3 servers are listed you'll have to get the information from your e-mail provider and enter it in the Primary Server section (I'd guess).

Hope this works for you.

Ron

Thanks Rondery, I had a look at it again and couldn't add a POP3 account. So I reset all data on the iPad.

When configuring through iTunes I reinstalled Contacts yet I only imported the .me account (which links up to all of my email accounts anyway) and problem is now sorted - I understand this not be a solution in some of the other cases but may be helpful to browsers of this forum in the future.

I have the identical issue as AndrewCr. iPad 3G worked fine for 2 weeks, then all my messages started appearing in the mailboxes of people I was sending to as "this message has no content." Highly annoying. Another issue with the iPad: VPN connection to my workplace works fine on any wireless network, but not on ATT 3G network. Techs at my company don't have a fix for this. If it's not solvable, usefulness of iPads for work applications would be limited.

I'm having this same issue right now...INCREDIBLY frustrating..and it seems to have extended to my MacBook Pro as well. Right now...I cannot send mail on my regular IMAP account from my MacBook; I can send e-mail via my AOL account. On my iPad, I can send e-mail from my IMAP account, but when I try to use my AOL account, I'm getting the problem where the content is empty. I've spent all day trying to resolve this to no avail. Hardly what I want to be doing!!! My ISP hasn't been able to help. I'm planning to call Apple to see if they have suggestions..I'm at my wit's end.
