Approximate how long does it take to upgrade from 10.5 server to 10.6 server?
Just need to lay out a downtime estimate.
Thanks

How long is a piece of string? 🙂

More specifically in this case, what services are running on your server?

If you're just running a simple web server then the install will take about half an hour and you're done.

However, if you're running a HTTP/VPN/DNS/Open Directory/DHCP/FTP/AFP/SMTP/IMAP/all-singing/all-dancing server then it's going to take longer, even if only to verify each service is working as expected after the upgrade.

We tried an upgrade on our 10.5 server which was behaving well at the time. It was set up like Camelot's second example, many services but everything on it was stock, set up via GUI, Server Admin and WGM, no manual command line changes or upgrades.

Upgrade to 10.6 took close to an hour. Afterwards we had some frustrating small issues. I can't remember what specifically, but they were nuisance issues to the users.

I wound up reverting to the 10.5 backup made in advance, upgrading a second backup, archiving the 10.6 OD from the upgraded system, building a 10.6 from scratch and restoring the archived 10.6 OD. Everything worked smoothly after that.
