Allocating disk space

I just bought final cut express and was getting ready to download some video for the first time. It started allocating disk space and I assumed this to be normal but my question is should it take a long time because mine has been going for 30min. already and it was concerning me. Could someone tell me if this is normal or should I suspect a problem

You have to format your external drive with Disk Utility.

Format it as Mac OS Extended with Journalling OFF and you should be fine.

Welcome to the discussions and or some Newbie hazing--"Read your manuals!"

EDIT--if you are capturing to your system drive, don't. That is probably why you are having the problem if you are not using an external drive.

Thank you so much for your reply to my problem. I formatted my External Hard drive and have been using it for my imovie projects for a while with no problems. Today I bought final cut express and when I selected to capture now trying to import my video the screen came up saying that it was allocating disk space. It has now been going for over an hour. Should I let it keep on or stop it and try something else?

Hmmm, every time I have seen this happen it's because of the drive format..

Is your cature scratch set correctly to your external drive?

Hmmm....

Is there a maximum file size set?

Joey

Are you using capture NOW or CLIP?
Check Marks suggestion about a value being set in the Scratch Discs> "Limit Capture Now To" box and tick it.
The default is 30 mins I recall.

If you have an anri-virus application running, try disabling it when using FCE.

This only happens when I click "capture now". I let the disk allocation run until it finally stopped hours later and then it could not find my camcorder which has worked great in imovie. I will check out the suggestions. If you have any more help for my problem let me know thanks.
