iPhone 3G one row of touch screen not working - DIY fixed!

If your phone has sustained an impact such as from a fall or a bang and your screen or a section of your screen no longer responds to touch input, it may be a quick repair you can do yourself.

If you don't care about violating the warranty or if you phone is already out of warranty, you might want to check under the "hood" to see if one of the ribbon cable connectors has disconnected as a result of the impact.

In my case, I removed the two Phillips screws from the bottom of the 3G and used a suction cup to pry up the touch screen (or use a case opener but the suction cup worked just fine). The ribbon connector labeled "4" was not fully connected so I pressed it down again, buttoned up the phone and it was working perfectly again.

Hope this helps and maybe saves you a trip to the Apple store or a costly screen replacement.

This is exactly what happened to me, and it worked. Thank goodness, too, because first I went to the Apple store and they said they would be happy to fix the screen for $200 - double what I paid for the phone in the first place.

It did take me a few attempts. Read the instructions for the beginning part of replacing the screen ( http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iPhone-3G-Front-Panel/587/2 ) very carefully before you try it, but it really isn't difficult. After I tried a few times with no success - and even made the screen's bald-spot spread to the entire surface - I found out on line that Cable #2 is the one that connects the glass/touch-screen to the base, and so I literally wiped off the pin-connectors on that cable and on its base port, and then the entire screen worked. Also dusting out the interior I think has resulted in the screen being even more responsive than before.
