Mac Pro 2008 shuts down during sleep

When I put my Mac Pro (early 2008 model) to sleep after timespan of several minutes one of two things may happen: either the light indicating sleep mode will die some moment and computer will be off, or it will die the moment I will try to wake it with double clicking noise (the click you hear when you start Mac Pro only it sounds two times for me, like trying to wake at first and then deciding to go off instead).

After Mac Pro turns itself off I can't start it. To do it I need to unplug the power cord first and then plug it back. Short period of sleep (like couple of minutes) goes fine. Mac Pro wakes up without errors.

Mac Pro is plugged into UPS, I tried switching backed up sockets for sockets without power back up to no avail.

What might be the cause of it?

Mac Pro 2008 4GB, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

May seem unlikely, but there was an EFI/SMC firmware update a couple months after the 2008 model first shipped to cure a common "freeze/restart on wake from sleep" issue.

1000VA/800W UPS or larger is a must due to unusually large inrush current they exhibit. Also can be affected by what else shares the same circuit.

Resetting SMC would be first step.

Trouble is, that these events can be causing lost or corrupt data or to the directory, and you are better off with Disk Warrior or something else than with Apple DU First Aid repair.

In addition to lost ability to sleep Mac Pro started to turn itself off sporadically. After it turns off I can't turn it on again for some time, and I have to re-plug the power cord. Seems it started happening more often now.

What I tried: plugging it directly and through UPS, swapping video card, replacing backup battery and swapping memory modules. Nothing helped. I think it is either PSU or logic board failure. It is not overheating.

Any ideas what this may be? I can try getting a new PSU, but I want to be sure it will help.

Get a 1500VA if you don't, an APC SMART 1000VA also. Good insurance.
What else is on the same wiring circuit... Maybe it overloads the circuit.

As mentioned elsewhere multiple times, those systems have an excessively high inrush current and the forum was littered with threads back in March 2008.

And try the new method for SMC Reset which is 10 second power-on with power cable unplugged.

Thanks, but I did those things already, Mac Pro has been plugged into different power outlets to make sure it's not lack of power, and of course I did SMC and PRAM resets as it described in Apple's help article. It just won't start even with everything (save power cord) unplugged until at least 15 minutes will pass.

Looks like the system isn't reliable anymore so I have to buy some temporal replacement while I'll be trying to fix Mac Pro. I'll let you know how it goes.

Odd problem.

Using the menu bar to sleep, the machine sometimes will shut off immediately. Sometimes it will enter sleep, from which it will occasionally wake normally and sometimes shut down.

Though energy Saver settings are set not to sleep the machine, it has slept once and shut down once after sitting for an hour.

Worried that continuing this will hurt my hard disk (have just replaced a faulty drive), I now plan my computer up time so as to avoid the issue if at all possible.

Have a good warranty program through my reseller here in Japan (five years) and have some trouble with the power supply fan being noisy, I will send the machine to Apple next week and add this problem to the list of things to check out.

Whew, I thought I was the only one with this problem. I'm also getting the "double-click" sounds when trying to wake the machine up from the dead zone (after going to sleep- either on its own or after attempting to awaken it a few minutes after manually putting it to sleep).

I've had my computer serviced by a Mac-authorized repair center three times for this issue. The first visit resulted in an operating system upgrade to Leopard, which seem to fix the issue for a few days. When it reappeared, the second visit resulted in a logic board switch- the technician actually kept it there because the problem reoccurred after testing the new board. He then found a broken wire in the power supply and replaced that. On the third visit, they actually had to send it in to the Apple engineering department- who replaced the video card with an updated version of the same.

This is driving me insane- the repair center knows their stuff (I'm in IT, myself so I know they're not incompetent)... they've exhausted nearly every possible solution- replaced every component, different OS, etc... the apple engineers couldn't even fix it. I dread going to the Apple Store because I know the people at the Genius Bar are way less knowledgable than the guys I go to... but since I'm still under AppleCare, I may be able to get a machine swap if they can't fix the problem in a few weeks.

Here's the update I promised: it was the PSU. I replaced it with another unit (used one, found on eBay) and everything is back to normal now.

So, let's summarize what it looks like when PSU is dying:

1. The sleep mode is unreliable. Mac can drop into turned off state either when sleeping or when you are trying to wake it up.

2. Mac may turn itself off spontaneously from working state (more likely to happen at higher power draw and when you plug in high power USB devices, like iPad).

3. After Mac turned off on its own it is very likely it won't turn on right away. There will be complete silence or clicks heard when you are pressing power button.

These are the signs of bad PSU in my case. If you are under Apple Care ask them for PSU replacement right away.
