Troubles with lotus notes webmail

Hi all,
Having some troubles when trying to access Lotus Notes webmail via Safari. I can log in and see all the messages but when trying to open an email or even to create a new one nothing happens. There are no error messages, it just doesn't respond at all. Others within the company access it with their iPhones with no problems.

Trouble shooting done so far.

Settings | Safari - ensured java was enabled
Settings | Safari - ensured pop up blocking was off
Settings | safari - Cleared history, cookies and cache
Restarted the device
Downloaded and installed Opera for the iPhone - this worked for opening emails but the option to create a new one is missing

Given the fact that opera is semi working and people with iPhones are able to use wembail without hitches, I suspect that when logging into the wembail server it detects you are using a mobile device and redirects you to a mobile site. This would explain why opera is "working" since its technically an iPhone app. However, I checked the url when logged in under opera and it does not appear to be different at all.

Any ideas? I know Safari views webpages in their original format, is there a way to have it redirect to mobile ones like most smart phones do?

Thanks!

I've also had problems like you describe. I think Lotus Notes webmail cannot interpret multitouch gestures properly, and is looking for a mouse 'click event'.

As a workaround, I set my preview to show the message body, then I could at least read and respond to my messages.

For what it's worth, I think Lotus Notes is a horrible, overly complicated and somewhat unstable piece of garbage. It can't even handle simple copy/paste in the desktop environment properly, actually tells users to 'click the body of the message' before it permits documents to be attached to a message, and in short pretty much epitomizes arrogant interface design coupled with clumsy execution.

I'm really not surprised that Lotus Notes webmail doesn't work properly with the simplest computing device known to man.

What version of Notes do you have? I get a message saying "Domino Web Access has not been certified to work with this browser" and I can choose one of:
Try Domino Web Access anyway
Use Lotus iNotes ultralite mode
Use WebMail
Logout

I try Domino Web Access anyway

As Mike says, it is pretty much useless with a touch screen. I can preview a message, I can create a new message, but I can't type in the body of the new message.

I can switch to Lite, but the text is so small I can't read it. Clicking New doesn't seem to do anything here.

I start over. Apparently that Lite mode isn't the same as Ultralite. The Ultralite mode seems to work fine and even has a distinct iPhone-esque look to it.

The last option, just WebMail looks like a real old, rude and crude webmail version done by somebody's kid that is good with computers.

So, see if you have access to the Ultralite mode. That one is definitely the best. Our Lotus Notes servers also have IMAP servers as well. I tend to use those instead of an actual Lotus client.

Thanks for the replies. Currently running notes 8.5. I will not argue with you that it is a horrible POS (piece of software) 🙂. Unfortunately the login screen does not allow for anything but logging in, I am familiar with the various types such as lite and ultralite. I like the idea of turning the preview pane on and it seems like a pretty witty workaround. But...I think I may have found something that will work. The Atomic web browser for the iPad (full version)will allow you to spoof the UserAgent string to make websites think you are running a different browser. For example.. Safari mobile, firefox, IE and others. The app its self is only $.99 and if it does what it says it will be exactly what I am looking for. I suggest checking it out if you are having problems viewing your webmail in safari.

If you are using Lotus Notes 8.5, you may be able to access Notes via your browser however you will need to ask your company's IT Dept to upgrade and install a Lotus Notes program, which I don't recall but IT can find it, that will allow you to access your Notes account via any Apple product. We have our Notes upgraded to 8.5.2 and I can access my Notes via Safari on both the computer, iPhone, and iPad.

Once IT makes that upgrade, you can also set-up Notes Mail on your iPhone as an Exchange Server account.
