I have had the same problem however deleting IBooks did not help and I have been messing with this for days...but I have found something that appears to work (its copying purchased items now, I'm crossing my fingers).

Try this... after plugging in your Ipad, right-click on the Ipad icon, but instead of choosing "transfer purchases", click on "backup". When I did this, instead of "looking for purchased items", it immediately started "transferring purchased items from Ipad"... and its been running now for 40 minutes.. (I have a quite a few purchased apps), but its not locking, and the apps copying... .

hope this helps

I really find this weird. I have been racking my brain on this with both my Ipad and Iphone 4 synced to my imac both having the freezing issue trying to find purchases. I didn't have any purchased nor any free books in ibooks, but I had opened some PDF's in Ibooks and I deleted them all. I was able to sync in less than 2 minutes. Hmm Come on apple surely you can fix this.....

I've experienced the exact same issue - iTunes would hang while trying to find 'purchased items' and I would have to force quit! I tried waiting for a while to see if the process would complete, but no luck. I just deleted 'The complete works of Jules Verne' that I had purchased on the iPad a couple of days ago and sync is working fine again! - Apple, please fix this issue ASAP!

I agree with all the above - just got iBooks and thought it would be wonderful to use the iPad for this given the fact US have been for some time now... Loaded some books & PDFs into iTunes and only when I clicked on "Sync Books" and "apply" have I had this issue. I appreciate the functionality add-on but come on Apple - did you not test this first??? It seems ridiculous that you offer & sell this stuff when this problem exists...

Thanks to the peeps for the option of "restore from backup" - I'm glad you have the time and patience to do this. I'd rather rip out my fingernails than start again from scratch and reload all my media again...

@bromo999 - unfortunately this didn't work for me, but thanks for the info.

I decided to try @holzra 's approach - pressed sync, viewed it 90mins later and still stuck so went to bed and let it be. Woke up this morning to find that it had finished the sync and according to iTunes (v10.2.2), all the books (700+) have been added to iPad. Performing new sync to add new music and seems to be going ok...

Same problem. iTunes hangs during the sync stage of "Finding Purchased Items." Corrected the problem by going to iBook on my iPad and manually deleting each new book that I had recently downloaded. Then back to iTunes (10.2.2) and able to perform a sync with my iPad without any problems. All my old books are fine. Did not need to delete the entire iBooks app. Just removing any of my more recently downloaded books corrected the problem. Not very classy. Will have to rely on Kindle books and the Kindle reader now.

I am having a similar problem. Unable to synchronise, iTunes hangs at Finding Purchased Items. Not willing to delete iBooks or otherwise try solutions that involve significant downloads (which nearly all Apple solutions seem to) as I am on holiday and bandwidth is at a premium. Really just posting to say I'm angry with Apple that they haven't managed to fix a problem which a little bit of googling indicates has been an issue for a number of users since last year. The iPad is marketed as a medium for reading books, so deleting iBooks is a non-solution. If this problem is not able to be resolved when I'm back home I will seek a refund and encourage others to do the same.

I read this whole thread because I was having the same problem. While doing so, I let iPhone keep synchronizing with itunes in the background. I was hung up on the same step, which was "transferring purchases from the iPhone. The whirling color wheel of doom was going and everything. When I finished the whole thread and clicked back to the iTunes window, everything was finished. It turned out in my case, I merely lacked patience. It was a surprise, though. The previous day of struggles with this issue had me force-quitting iTunes multiple times which my computer said was "not responding." This probably isn't everyone's experience, but I wanted to report that my own came down to lack of patience on my part.

Thanks for all everyone wrote. It helped.
