at no time, was my iPod ever recognized in 'My Computer'.
that's +expected behavior+. the Touch does not support *disk mode* like other iPod models. click here for more information.
Someone please help! I'm at my wits end without being able to use and update my iPod. All help/insight/suggestions are appreciated.
okay, did you remove iTunes completely ? click here and follow the instructions.
any improvement ?
Well, when my iPod Touch was working properly before it was recognized in 'My Computer'. Not as a disk drive but simply as a device.
Also, I redid all the steps for an iTunes uninstall/install and it finally worked this time (after 4 previous tries).
So now iTunes is working but my iPod touch still won't charge and it's not showing up in iTunes. Also, under 'Device Manager' under the 'USB controllers' there is not reference to iPod or even mass storage device; just Intel (R) <numbers> and USB Root Hub.
Lastly, I also checked Apple Mobile Device Support under Programs and it's installed and up to date. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help however, I tried the recovery mode before and I tried it again just to be sure. I can get my Touch to the "connect to itunes" screen but the device is still not recognized in iTunes when I attach it to the USB cable. I double checked to make sure that the cable is not faulty and it's working perfectly.
I also reset my Touch and went through the MSCONFIG utility to check for any conflicting software issues and I didn't find any.
Any further ideas are definitely appreciated.

how did you test that ?
anyhoo, you might want to give this a shot:
+It works now, It suddenly stopped detecting due to unknown reasons, but try these steps.+
+Restart the device without connecting to your pc and+
+Connect to pc and restart again, I did this 2 times and it was recognized and its working fine.+
+Best of luck.+
here's the original thread: http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-17997-ipod-not-detected
if still no joy, it could be that your Touch is a goner. if it is still under warranty, you should plan a trip to the nearest Apple store.
Thanks again. However, I don't believe it is a problem with the iPod itself. When I plug my Touch into the AC adpater using the same USB cable it charges fine.
I've figured out that I'm missing the drivers for the Touch to be recognized as a USB device; no entry for apple/ipod/mass storage device under 'universal serial bus controllers' in device manager. Even after a clean uninstall and install multiple times.
If anyone else has any further info of a similar problem that would be greatly appreciated.
I dunno if you're still having the problem, but I was having the same problem for about 3 days, and nonstop I tried to figure out how to fix it, and I finally did.
had a faulty USB plugin for my iPod. The cord that came with mine wouldn't respond to my computer, but then I used my sister's old one and it works just fine everytime I plug it in to any computer.
Hope it helps!
I'm having the same exact problem. When i plug my ipod in, the computer doesn't recognize it at all. Not even under unknown or anything. When I plug in my cell phone, it recognizes it right away. I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes countless times, restarted my computer and my ipod about a million times, and nothing happens. I went through the links that everyone has posted on this, and when I go to the device manager there is nothing about anythinng being unknown, or my ipod, or the mobile device. I have tried everything and I don't know what to do. I can't use money for services. I called 1-800-MY-APPLE twice and they told me all they could for free and the same with Dell, and obviously nothing has worked. If someone has anything they can hepl me with it's greatly appriciated, and for whoever posted this, if it finally started working for you, please let me know what you did, because it seems you had the same issues as i'm having now.
Did you check if there are any BIOS updates for your computer?
This one may be working as well: "iPod not recognized correctly on Toshiba laptop": http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1878
