certain outgoing addresses rejected

Repeatedly it has happened (in 10.5.6 and now 10.6.3), when sending a group email, that certain addresses are rejected and Mail won't send the email. Some are addresses I know are good, such as institutional ones.

Just now, as the group email was waiting on another "Try later", I sent another email to one person, and this time Mail was able to get the server to accept all the 25 or so "not recognized" addresses. It went without a hitch.

Any idea why this would happen?

I did not do good detective work in the past, just pulled out the "bad" addresses and never tried them by themselves, but why should that matter?
