GPS track/waypoint file import or merge into iPhoto

Does anyone have a workflow to import a GPX file into iPhoto to geotag photos from the tracks and waypoints? Regardless of whether JPG or Raw?

I have GiSTEQ 111 with software. I can extract waypoints and tracks into files. I have thought to either import into their Jetserver and then re-import into iPhoto. Or instead of Jetserver, import into Photolinker and then reimport into iPhoto.

the link is http://calftrail.com/geotagalog/

In reading their web site it does not appear that GeoTagLog has the capability of working with photos in the iPhoto library but that you must apply the GeoCodding to the photos prior to importing - that is fine but not what the OP requested I believe - HoudahGeo does work with the iPhoto database and can add Geo data to photos within the iPhoto database safely (of course you should ALWAYS have a current backup because things do happen)

Thanks for the mention of Geotagalog! (Disclaimer: I wrote it.)

Just wanted to clarify: In version 2.0, which is now publicly available as a beta, you no longer have to tag only on import. You can drag photos in from iPhoto and either tag the original files (in which case you will have to "Rescan for Location") or it can just add Place data to your iPhoto library (safely via Applescript; it doesn't write to the undocumented internal database directly). Right now the free demo lets you tag up to 24 photos at once this way, but this may get significantly more generous in the near future.

See this blog post: http://calftrail.com/blog/2010/4/30/geotagalog2_beta for the link and more info.

Hope this helps!

Just to add my two cents.

I use GraphicConverter to Geotag my Olympus RAW photos either by picking the locations in Google Earth and then telling GC to use the current G.Earth location. Or by importing my GPS data logger logs and having it match the photos to the log data.

As mentioned, I do have to do this generally before I add the photos to iPhoto.

Woo Hoo!!!

Thank You very much PT for mentioning that you use GC w/ Google Earth to set GPS coords. I have been searching for hours for a util to correct or implant GPS data in to my jpgs.

This feature alone may just warrant purchasing a license!!!

Genius!!

Would you happen to know how to get iPhoto '09 to recognize the new GPS data once it is updated/added? The pictures are already in iPhone and are not acknowledging the changes and still shows the original location information.

TIA

Prune ( http://www.activityworkshop.net/software/prune/index.html) is not really a workflow, but it is a nice Java application that works well on Mac and has quite a few controls to attach photos to GPS tracks (it uses the GPX format for the tracks, which is available from many GPS devices). If you want to save the GPS co-ordinates back to the photos again, you need to use EXIF Tool ( http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/) which has a Mac DMG file to install it.

This will not work directly with iPhoto, but it will work directly on the photos themselves, and all the software is free.

As an aside, Prune is great for getting rid of all those "unwanted" sections on a GPX file, such as when the GPS device was searching for its position, or you forgot to turn it off and it kept recording, or to split tracks into separate pieces or join separate tracks into one. I started using it for this reason, then realised how great it was for photo tagging.
