Rebuilding Thumbnail caches STUCK

Followed a MacWorld article suggesting rebuilding caches will speed up iPhoto

Has had opposite effect

All I have now is it stuck at Rebuilding Thumbnail caches with spinning wheel. Have also deleted the file com.apple.iPhoto form library file as suggested elsewhere Makes no difference.

Help please cannot use iPhoto

Quit iPhoto.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair library permissions.

Or, simply restore the back up you made before following the advice from Macworld.

Hi,

I have done that Each time I do so it gets stuck in rebuilding Thumbnail Cache. I have also gone back in time machine and restored a previous version. When I re-open iPhoto it is still stuck there. Also tried relaunching holding down those keys which offers me menu again to make Thumbnail cache. I tried leaving it running overnight just to make sure that I allowed enough time. Right click on iPhoto says application not responding Force Quit so I tried that too

Any other ideas please? Thanks

Try rebuilding using only the last three options. Unless you're having some problems with the thumbnails not showing or something like that I see no reason to rebuild the thumbnails. The rebuild option to reclaim unused disk space in the databases will speed up the library.

Hi,

I have just tried that then it goes back to the same problem I made sure ONLY last 3 boxes ticked I have also tried just ticking "Rebuild the iPhoto Library database from automatic backup" Same problem gets stuck doing thumbnails.

Should I delete the file from the library called Library / caches / com.apple.iPhoto first before I do what you suggest?

It appears you have a damaged library. Try rebuilding the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option

4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

5 - Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows.

The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Thank you I have tried that unfortunately I keep getting messages like this

"An error has occurred while attempting to import the event "21 Jul 2009". If you would like to continue, but skip the event "21 Jul 2009", click "Skip". If you would like to stop the merge, click "Cancel"

This has happened 6 times each time stopping the process I have tried Continue and Skip but neither works I have not cancelled because a lot of my photos have been imported unto iPhoto already

What should I do?

Hi again

I have also tried extracting photos using IPLM but each time I open iPhoto I get the dreaded spinning wheel but I can see all the photos now with dates instead of event names

It appears that the library is damaged to the point where rebuilding is not going to work. Give this a try:

Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.

1 - Move the existing library folder to the desktop
2 - Open the library package like this.
3 - Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4 - Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

This will give you a new library with all the same Events as your damaged one. The original library will still be intact for further testing and repair if desired.

That snapshot is the inside of an iPhoto 8 (09) library package. You get there by Control-clicking on the library and selecting "Show package contents".

If you want to add a photo to a post you first need to upload the photo to a server, MobileMe or other 3rd party server, and use the following code:

Trying to launch iPhoto from dock has same spinning wheel

I am sorry if I am being dense here but I just am not following what you are saying Please can you spell it out step by step each stage I should do in detail as if you talking to an idiot !! I find iPhoto very confusing and ending up with lots of duplicate photos is eating up my computer HD

That's not what the instructions say 🙂

That's +Launch iPhoto+ not double click on Library.iPhoto...

No, that's not what I said to do. After getting into the iPhoto library package you do the following:
