Can't copy large video files FROM iPhone to PC

I've searched high and low for a solution to this one. Every google hit on this search finds no resolution. Does the Apple community know how to get around this problem?

I used my 32GB iPhone 3Gs to shoot a video which turned out to be 48 minutes long, and approximately 1.2GB in file size. It plays OK on the iPhone itself.

However, when attempting to transfer or copy the large video file from the iPhone to PC, it FAILS. The photos and small-under-7gb-videos copy to PC just fine. The PC shows it's copying the file for a few minutes, however when done, the file copied to PC won't open, and shows a file size of zero. In some attempts, an error 80004005 shows.

Seriously, why use the iPhone to shoot a long video, if it can't be transferred to your PC? Any help on this matter is much appreciated.

I'm a PC, Windows XP

I have an iphone 5, but I am using windows 10. The issue does appear to be any video much longer than 41 minutes (yikes). I consider this a serious UX fail. Anyway, in windows 10, do the same backup, but the BACKUP PATH is slightly different:

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

The files are encoded and without extensions, i.e.:

[BACKUP PATH]\0ce8a47b967a22788d641039303ff3f07f169778\67\67cd8850500c7d4a2649776e4272e 1d1a803f6f9

So, at the backup path location, do a search on everything (use '*') and sort by SIZE DESCENDING. Then go to the bottom of the window, and you will be looking for a file 4.5 GB or bigger. Copy (don't move) those to someplace safe, and rename them with .MOV (you should also call them something nicer than 67cd8850500c7d4a2649776e4272e1d1a803f6f9.MOV).

Anyway, then you can browse through them much quicker and find that video I was so desperate to get up on YouTube! I mean, you were so desperate to ... anywho.

Thanks!

I might have seemed a bit ticked in my last post and I was so sorry about that, I'd spent about an hour looking throught forums for a solution and got no where until I found itools.

I don't know if it matter but I think you need to have itunes installed for the drivers so itool's can work.

Thanks you for the praise, just happy I could help

I had the same problem. This is what worked for me: I noticed that my iphone capacity was nearly full. I removed enough music and photos from my iphone by unsyncing through itunes until I had more free space on my iphone (11 gb) than the size of the video I wanted to import (3.3 gb). As soon as I did that, I was able to import my movie easily into iphoto. It's easy to resync your photos and music after you get your movie imported.

I have this problem too, on only one of my XP-machines (the big one).

When I try to copy files to my small HP-webbook (with XP), everything is fine....

Vista and Win 7 works fine too.

It's the same file (only 360 megs), but on one of my machines, i am unable to copy.

If I try to drag-and-drop, absolutely NOTHING happens. if I try to "copy to my pictures", it open the "my pictures" folder, and does NOTHING.

On the little machine, I can DND, copy to "my pictures" end everything works like a charm....

both run XP home, SP3....Weird....

Just thought I would mention it.

Thanks to all the people who posted useful answers (the iexplorer worked for me on my home computer)

Tanks for the effort Starsake, but I was already aware of that method. The problem is, that on my computer, and only on that particular computer, I can't copy files larger than roughly 160 mb.

On other xp machines, it works ok, and on vista/7 machines, I can even drag and drop.

Only my own machine acts up :-(

I have a 4G iPhone and am trying to copy to my work PC running XP. Sorry, I wish it was as simple as right click and select copy and paste or paste to but this does not work. When I do what you suggest (that was my initial attempt without even reading your comments) The video image shows up in Windows Explorer but the file size is 0 KB while the actual file size on my iPhone is 3.5 GB and another is 2.5 GB. I was able to copy off a 260 MB file but that is way smaller than the 2 files I need.

Right - similar problem many of us had. The free iExplorer worked great for me - very fast.

Another user suggested iTools, found at http://itools.hk/tscms/index.php?a=webpage&pid=12. It organizes phone files in a friendlier way, though it doesn't have an install program; it's just a nice little EXE - you can make a shortcut, or just leave it on the desktop.

Hi,

I have tried all sugestion in this post.... and finaly I managed to copy my 2 video files (less than 360MB each) to my PC (windws xp sp3). The main problem now is both files will not play on the pc...

Quick time throws the 2048 error... and other player just will not open it....

Bothe videos plays great on the iphone 4... but no way to transfer them to the pc... and when copied by other methods... they just will not play.....

Any clue?

Thanks.

Hey everyone... not too sure if this issue was figured out or not, but I want to leave a quick note on something that worked for me. I had the same problem... when I tried to copy large videos the progress bar would sit there with no bars indicating the file was being transferred then the progress bar would disappear and the file would be in the destination folder with a size of 0 bytes. After all the messing around to find a solution I tried the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard (Start, All Programs, Accessories, Scanner and Camera Wizard) so far the largest Quicktime file I've been able to transfer is about 500 MB... larger ones fail so I use an App called Wi-Fi Disk for transferring those. By the way, I am using Windows XP Media Centre (Pro) w/SP3. Don't know why it works for me in this way but this definately needs to be addressed.

I can verify that the "retrieve from local backup" method works on Win XP SP3.

I had 4 video files, each totalling over 3GB in size. All were copied from local backup, renamed with .mov file formats and opened in Quicktime without fail.

Previous attempts with Windows Explorer, Scanner and Picture Wizard and other 3rd party apps were ineffective.

In fact, Windows didn't even see that I had 4 videos on my iPhone. It only found 3 of them. Extremely odd.
