Q: Can't copy large video files FROM iPhone to PC

I've searched high and low for a solution to this one. Every google hit on this search finds no resolution. Does the Apple community know how to get around this problem?

I used my 32GB iPhone 3Gs to shoot a video which turned out to be 48 minutes long, and approximately 1.2GB in file size. It plays OK on the iPhone itself.

However, when attempting to transfer or copy the large video file from the iPhone to PC, it FAILS. The photos and small-under-7gb-videos copy to PC just fine. The PC shows it's copying the file for a few minutes, however when done, the file copied to PC won't open, and shows a file size of zero. In some attempts, an error 80004005 shows.

Seriously, why use the iPhone to shoot a long video, if it can't be transferred to your PC? Any help on this matter is much appreciated.

I'm a PC, Windows XP

I tried a few things on here, but just tried something tha seems to make it unnecessary to use any 3rd party apps.  I closed iTunes while importing video into iPhoto.  It was a 6GB video and was hopelessly not importing in image capture, iMovie, or iPhoto, but then when I tried closing iTunes it worked perfectly. (as the trial copy of TouchCopy11 was suggesting... they wanted me to buy before I could import so I thought I'd apply their logic to Apple's process.)

I'd be intersted to hear if that solves it for other people.

My hypothesis is that if your phone is trying to maintain a connection with iTunes it somehow is "blurring" the import process with the phone trying to connect to another app.

I import fairly large videos on a regular basis, so I will definitely know if this was a fluke before long.

I'd recommend to anybody who is just coming upon this thread to try bkim028's solution on the first page before you do anything else. Worked for me and everybody else who reported trying it, and it's super easy... you don't have to install anything or change any settings.

Some of us experienced the same problem using Windows Explorer and Picasa, withour iTunes. I don't know how the problem is with Win 7, but my iPhone 5 comes next week and we can hope the problem goes away. Too bad it's not USB 3.0 :-(

I suppose. I just seems so funky; looking around for the files and renaming the extension.

I had the same issue.  Large video wouldn't copy off the phone to the computer. I ended up just using DROPBOX's app on the phone and then just waiting for it to sync over to the computer.  Seems to work well and it's fairly easy.

... in XP you need to 'unhide' the 'hidden files' in the iPhone folder so you can see them to copy onto your PC.

    You were right on!

I searched high and low looking for a solution to my large file transfering problem from iPhone 5 to my PC using XP and your idea worked great!

Thank goodness iTunes is good for something.

    Thanks,

    Dave

I am using the iPhone 4S and Windows XP Service Pack 3. I don't use iTunes so I found another solution which I don't think has been mentioned. I looked into iExplorer but they appear to want $35 for it now. A free solution which worked great was iFunBox. I just installed it and used it to copy over 24GB of Video and photo files with no issues. Found at http://www.i-funbox.com/

Quick update, iTools still free and used to transfer 20+ GB, it is very quick to transfer files (compared to XP explorer) and have not found a video that it gets stuckl on

    iTools  http://itools.hk/cms/webpage30.htm or http://itools.hk

Free third party app with a simple GUI that allows you to back up photos, videos, contacts, PDFs (plus has other functionality that I did not use). iTools qjuicky transferred all 25.3 GB of vidoes and photos including Photos (900+) and Videos (100+). It did this in under 35 minutes with zero errors, which was very quick compared to thel windows explorer and picasa transfer

If you are still eager to try some suggestions in the matter i would recommend PhoneStick for the proper communication of your iOS device and a PC. Works perfectly starting from XP. Manages your media files no matter how big they are. Can find it over here: http://softorino.com/phonestick/download/

The latest iTools seems to transfer files painfully slowly to my XP PC, and iExplorer is no longer free.

An alternative free solution is to use an FTP server on the iPhone, and then transfer using Windows Explorer (or any other FTP client on the PC).

I used FTP Media Server app on the iPhone. It's currently free and works very well:

    • start FTP Media Server on the iPhone
    • on the Windows XP PC, start Windows Explorer (or any other FTP client)
    • in Windows Explorer's "Address" field, enter "ftp://your_iphone_IP_address:50000", where "your_iphone_IP_address" is as displayed by the FTP Media Server app on the iPhone
    • find your iPhone's videos in Windows Explorer and click-and-drag or copy-and-paste as you like

Note that this method goes over wi-fi (instead of the USB cable), so the transfer speed may be limited by the speed of both the PC's and iPhone's wi-fi connections.

Note also that this approach has the advantage that, once the app is installed on the iPhone, you can transfer to practically any other computer (PC or otherwise, any operating system), without needing to install any special software on the computer, as virtually all operating systems already have an in-built FTP client (e.g. Windows Explorer, most web browsers, etc).
