pre-typed / selectable messages

In a previous texting-enabled phone, I was able to select/add short messages and then to select one to send without having to type the same message again on another day. Is this possible with iPhone?

The iPhone does not have pre-selected messages that you can use to send like a "quick message" in a text or email. However, as a workaround, you can create some short messages in the Notes application and you could copy and paste them into SMS.

As another solution, I have the Dragon Dictation app and you can actually say small messages there and then paste them into the SMS app to send.
