POP Mail iPad Set Up Problems (Cox Cable)

Hello!

Tried to set up two of my Cox.net email accounts on the iPad and after several minutes of the spinning cog, it was unable to connect to the server in each case. I used the proper username, email address and POP server (pop.central.cox.net) and used the same SMTP server as my iPhone (cwmx.com). Unable to get email set up.

Anyone else have this or similar problems?

Anyone have any solution or suggestions?

Thanks much!

It sounds like you have all the settings set up the same way I have two iPhones set up. I won't get my iPads for another week, but I can't see why the set up would be different from the iPhone.

By the way, I'm in Las Vegas, so I use the same settings as you. These settings are also set up the same way on my iMac Mail preferences and everything is fine there.

I don't remember if you said you turned off all the "other servers" that show up. If not try that.

I wish I could be or more help, but I'm out of ideas at this point.

Maybe when I get my iPads in a week, I'll know more about whether or not they have a different set of rules. Shouldn't but who knows.

In the meantime, if you solve the problem, please post the solution here for the rest of us. I see the Cox send mail issue come up repeatedly, has been since the intro of the iPhone.

Good luck.

Colegrove,

I didn't realize you were still having problems with this. Let's start from the beginning and detail everything.

1) You set it up as a new POP account
2) Incoming Mail Server: pop.REGION.cox.net, where REGION is West, South, etc. (your region)
3) User Name: yourname (WITHOUT "@cox.net")
4) Password: yourpassword
5) Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.REGION.cox.net
6) Hit the Advanced button and make sure SSL is ON, Authentication is Password, and Server Port is 995
7) After setup, go back to the SMTP button and click the right arrow, then make sure that the Primary Server is smtp.REGION.cox.net, and that all Other SMTP Servers are OFF.

That should work. If it doesn't, I suspect your problem may be something else, like a wifi connection problem and not really an SMTP server error.

Got my 2 iPads and successfully set up my and my wife's Cox accounts.

Here is what I suggest, if you have a MobileMe account. Delete the Cox account info from your iPad so there is no trace. Then start up iTunes with your iPad hooked up. Click on the "info" tab. Scroll down to the synch email accounts and check all your email accounts to turn them on. By the way, I leave this set on for subsequent synchs and it doesn't seem to have any adverse effect.

That is what I did and voila! the accts work perfectly on the iPad. The settings, if you look at them on the iPad, are exactly the same as those on my iPhone.

Now, if you don't have MobileMe, I suggest doing what I needed to do to get Cox to work on my iPhone.

Start by writing down all the settings that you need to set up and the values they should have. I say this because I never could get it to work by changing one setting at a time or going back and making changes. I had to delete the accts and set them up in one attempt.

Delete your Cox accts and set up every parameter at the same time.

I am replying to this post and the one after. After spending an hour trying to figure out what was wrong I went to the location mentioned in this post and the next and found all sorts of erroneous data like a password a mile long, incorrect user name, SSL off, etc. I thought since I filled out the other data correct, and Ipad checked everything after verifying with a check mark, that all was correct.

Moral of the story. You know the expression "trust but verify" well in this case don't trust the Ipad verify do your own verify.

Steve, I believe I have found the problem in setting up your Cox SMTP for outgoing mail. Please do the following:

1) Go to Settings, and click on Mail, Contacts, Calendars
2) Click on your Cox account under Accounts
3) Scroll down and click on SMTP under Outgoing Mail Server (should be SMTP.WEST.COX.NET)
4) Click on SMTP.WEST.COX.NET under Primary Server
5) The Server button should be ON, Hostname should be SMTP.WEST.COX.NET, enter your Cox Username and Password, Use SSL should be ON, Authentication should be Password (the iPad seems to put in MD5 Challenge-Response, so change it to Password), Server Port should be 587
6) Click Done, back out, then re-boot.

That should do it.

Thank you virtualgeo. That solved a week-long problem I was having with my Comcast acct. I am still getting some mail in my secondary account (Gmail) even when it's addressed to my Comcast and it doesn't deliver in Comcast at all. Can you give steps for settings on Gmail if it's a secondary acct, specifically what is Gmail's server port number and under STMP where it says "Primary Server" should that be on or off?

Thank you, all.
