I searched for this a long time too. Then I noticed that under Windows the iPad appears in the Windows Explorer and I can delete the photos easily from there. You cannot delete the folders (with cryptic names), but the photo files themselves can be deleted.

Not an ipad/mac solution but does work and produce fast results

this is a really EXCELLENT site and tip, I hadn't found this information anywhere else (although a BING search did yield it)

I'm surprised apple doesn't put this information on the website

Image Capture is defintately the easiest way by far..what a load of rubbish from Apple yet again. Why is it that you also only get the option to Import All or tick one at a time... ? I went to import 200 pics but there is no select all, so you can then unselect a few !! i have to either import all or select one at a time !

Apple, you should be ashamed ! No wonder you get everyone else to build the Apps for your hardware, you seem to be incapable of doing the simplest of things.

Whilst im on my rant, why do you keep changing my mute button back and forth to rotation lock then back to mute...give me the choice to change it.....grrrrrrrrrrr

We are just fellow users here, Apple don't monitor these forums (there are too many forums/thread/posts for that) - you can leave feedback for them here : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

In terms of rotation lock/notification lock you do have a choice in iOS 4.3+ : Settings > General > Use Side Switch To (with the function that the switch isn't controlling being set by the left-hand end of the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085)

Image Capture is somewhat useful and can remove some photos, but you have to remember to turn off iTunes sync first. Then open Image Capture. THEN plug in your iPad/iPhone.

If you don't turn off iTunes and you are connected to iTunes with WiFi or directly, Image Capture will disconnect your device.

For some reason I couldn't get them all and it's driving me nuts. Over 500 are still left on the device!

I could delete them all individually, but my finger would be pretty sore.

Apple needs to seriously address this problem. It's too bad customers have to develop unusual methods to clear out their photos when it should be no trouble adding an album delete feature.

Just wanted to say this worked beautifully for me - I'm a graphic designer who wanted to sync a set of portfolio images to my iPad; the first time I did it, I forgot about sets of thumbnails that were in the same folders with the large images, so it was a mess. Syncing to an empty folder got rid of all those images on my iPad, then I was able to re-sync with a streamlined image folder. Thanks ptcmini!
