What Res can my 20inch 2008 model run on an external screen?

Thinking of getting a 23/24" screen to run alongside my iMacs 20".

I am right in thinking these will run extended desktop arent i first off (my last Mac would only run mirrored) but i think apple opened that up again.

And what res will i be able to run it at? 1900x1080 i hope? I have the 256Mb Radeon 2600HD and obviously my 20" screen is at 1680x1050, so can it run an exteral screen at a higher res?

I cant find anywhere what its capable of running, so all help appreciated! Also i take it ill need a mini display port to DVI connector??

iMac Intel Core2Duo 2.4Ghz 4Gb Ram Radeon 2600 HD 256Mb 320Gb HD, Mac OS X (10.6), 3G iPhone, Wacom Bamboo, Logitech Z-5500 5.1

Hi,

taken from the tech specs here: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP16

Support for external display in extended desktop mode

* Digital resolutions up to 1920 by 1200 pixels
* Analog resolutions up to 2048 by 1536 pixels

And these iMacs have a Mini DVI-port not a Mini DisplayPort !!
Appropriate adapters can be found here http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/macaccessories/displays?mco=OTY2ODUwNQ depending on the port/cable of the external display.

In extended display mode the resolutions of internsal and external display can be different and the external can have a higher one than the internal.

Regards

Stefan
