Best codec for DVD export for editing

Do you mean you want to burn the footage onto data dvds, or do you want to author a dvd?

If data dvd's, burn whatever you captured, if that's the bes quality you can get out of it.

Or is this a trick question?

If you need to compress the files to get them to fit on DVD's, I've found using compressor to convert to h264 at full quality, and maintaining pixel dimensions and frame rate of your source files does a pretty amazing job. Your client will need to convert the files back to something more edit friendly. I done this in situations where we had to zap files back and forth across the country and it worked very well. Not ideal, but ...

What editing application will they be editing with?

DVD's aren't the best archival solution. They hold 4.7GB of info, and that is like 20 min of DV quality footage. Forget about HD quality...Oh, unless you use HDV. That's the same data rate

Go to Best Buy or Costco and buy a firewire or USB drive.
Copy all of your footage/media to the drive.

Forget about discs, especially since you stated that you have more than one tape's worth of footage.

Tell the client that they need to provide you with a portable hard drive (equal in size to your LaCie) for you to copy all the footage onto, or buy a hard drive and bill the client for it.

Only if you chop it up into itty bitty segments and use lots of discs. Or, compress it highly to fit on one disc and destroy the chance to effectively edit in the future.

DVDs are meant to hold a delivery format, not an editing format.
