For the past couple weeks, I keep losing my 3G connection and getting a "No Sim Card Installed" error. The status bar shows "No SIM" next to the wifi icon.

In the past, if I shut the iPad all the way off, then re-booted, it fixed the problem. Now, however, even that trick isn't working.

I've tried re-seating the SIM thinking it might be lose, but that's not the issue.

***? This has become very annoying, and I'm not getting the 3G use I'm paying for when it only works part of the time.

There may be a problem with the SIM card. You should be able to get a replacement micro-SIM at a local AT&T store. If no change with a new SIM card, call AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

Try restoring the iPad and recovering from the backup in iTunes.
Another option is restoring the iPad and set it up as a new device, which will rule out any issues with the software on the device, but it will not recover any data saved in the backup.

If the issue persists after restoring the iPad, try getting a replacement Micro-SIM from AT&T.

Also, you can always make a reservation with a Genius or contact AppleCare to get the iPad serviced.
The tips above will make sure the issue doesn't return on a new iPad.

Thanks for the tip. I've made an appointment to bring it in on Friday. Hopefully it's just a bad SIM card...

    You're welcome.

If you made an appointment at an Apple store, not sure if they have replacement micro-SIM cards available. If there is an AT&T corporate store nearby, stop by with your iPad to explain the problem and request a replacement micro-SIM card. There should be no charge for this. If this resolves the problem, you can cancel your appointment at the Apple store.

That did the trick. Stopped by an AT&T store during lunch today, and they swapped out the SIM card. Everything working fine now.

    Good deal.

    Thanks for the update.

I've had the "No SIM card installed" error multiple times since getting my 3g iPad 2 weeks ago. I called Apple and they reset the network. That worked until it didn't work anymore. Actually not sure it ever worked. But the tech support said if it didn't work, go to the at&t store and get the SIM card replaced which I did. Reset network. Reset iPad. Still is happening. Not the SIM card. I've been told to Restore the iPad. OK will do that.

Resetting the Airport switch, turn on turn off has always fixed the problem. Annoyance more than anything. But I have also lost the SIM while surfing when I turned the iPad over. Plus I have a weak cellular signal here. But it also did have the Error when I went into the At&t store. So it happens fairly often. Have no ideas why but it's not the SIM card on mine.
My plan- restore software. If that doesn't work then I'll need to have this iPad replaced.

Follow up on the SIM error. I Restored the iPad. Didn't help. So now I've changed the SIM card and Restored and still get randomly the "No SIM card installed" error.
    Not happy.

I have the same problem too. Problem just persists. Will Apple do something about this?

Getting this on my iPad too.

    • Reinstalled SIM, cleaned it and reinstalled it.
    • Turned iPad off and on several times
    • Did a full restore

Still nothing. Not sure what to do now.

so in good news I have had this issue resolved.

Went into Apple Store to see a genius. We tried the SIM in another iPad - same problem. So it was a fault with the Orange SIM I had.

Called Orange and once I explained everything done to try to solve the problem they immediately sent out a new SIM to me via courier and it is all working fine now.

Hope that helps the rest of you.

I got a new sim card, did a full restore, no joy. Got a replacement IPAD from the Apple Store.

I'm from Italy and I have the same problem too.
    In 2 days 4 times.

The first two times I have rebooted iPad. Another two times I get off sim card and put it into iPad. The issue gone.
I don't understand if this is a sim problem, iPad software problem or hardware problem.

I have the same operator on iPhone but it has not any issue like this.

Roadrage, they won't do anything if you don't tell them, even we fanboys don't believe Steve Jobs can read minds. Apple is pretty good at customer support, though, so ring or take it in personally. Try the hints here first if you have not already done so, though.
