Using iTunes with External Hard Drive - Error Message
I have successfully moved my iTunes library an external hard drive - updated the iPod and all seems normal except - I am attempting to add additional music to the iTunes library in the ehd and I keep getting the following message: Attempting to copy to the disk "the name of my ehd" failed. You do not have access privileges for this operation.
Select the icon for the external and Get Info. Make sure that you have Read and Write permissions and that it's applied to All Enclosed Folders. (look under the Gear symbol for the apply all option.)
Sharing and permissions allow me to read & write to the drive - I tried dragging something to it and it accepted the file but still doesn't allow me to add to iTunes - same message as before
Are you sure the permissions are applied to all enclosed folders? If just one folder within the structure doesn't have write permission, it could be affecting your efforts. Otherwise, I have no idea.
When you copied a file to the drive through Finder, did you place it within the iTunes folder...or just loose on the drive?
Select the external then right click - get info.
Go to *Sharing & Permissions* and select *Ignore ownership on this volume*.
Don't worry about what the permissions are set to.
Also, your error is probably because the iTunes library file (not the external drive) has permissions set incorrectly.
Go to \Music\iTunes\ and set the permissions for you to *Read & Write* and *Apply to enclosed items*.
