Free international messaging app similar to BB IM?

I'm looking for an app that would work like the IM feature of the Blackberry, and be billed the same way. Currently, if you have the international feature turned on with your BB service (at least through tmobile), the IM charges you as if you are just using data. For example, a weeks worth of pretty heavy chatting with the wife while I was out of the country hit me for all of .37!! No per text fee, no roaming cause I already have an international plan, just the data per character of text.
Has anyone found any way to do anything like this with an iPhone? It is the last hurdle for us to switch over to iPhones.
