SVGZ in Safari?

How does one create an .svgz file that Safari can read?

(the 'z' indicates a compressed/gzipped Scalable Vector Graphic)

Creating a normal .svg (exported out of, say, Illustrator) is straightforward. However, Safari seems to be rather picky about .svgz files. I've seen them load from other sources, but don't can't figure out how to create my own.

Are any other tools or settings or hacks known to make this happen?

Thanks.
