I would contact your network provider and inform them of the theft. They might be able to disable the iPhone with you knowing the IMEI number. Also inform the police, but I would be more inclined to think that your network provider would be perhaps able to disable the stolen iPhone.

my case (just for sharing if you are free to read):--
I'd made Police report, contacted my service provider twice (called-in + walked-in) to request them to disable (block) my stolen iPhone.But, they told me they cant do it and i have to get Apple's to do it.
Then i wrote to Apple, but still NO responses from Apple after 2.5weeks. Today, a friend from Singapore told me Singapore service provider can disable iPhone with IMEI number. So i called my provider again, they just said they cant do it and will not even check with Apply and get back to me! (i asked them please check with Apple & call me in 1 week time)! Then, they asked where i get the information. Hope you all can help me. Thanksssss
I need official information & get back to my service provider again.(i'm with them for>15 years!! i think it might time for me to switch)
P/S: The lady (service provider) was very reluctant to give me case number for my call today. finally, I got it after i informed her that my call can be tracked via my phone number, name, date+call-in time, even without case number. Have a nice day!
As far as I know, no one can disable the iphone from being used. You can have the carrier disable the iphone, but the person who has it can restore it and use it with their own account.
If the Service provider does not offer the ability to remotely wipe the phone, then escalating the issue with them offers no benefit.
Apple does NOT remotely wipe or lock users devices. Apple offers MobileMe which (if purchased and enabled) gives the user the ability to remotely wipe the device.
