Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

You may visit http://trackpad.powerplan7.com for details.

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

Cheers, and enjoy Trackpad++, something Apple definitely have had to implement a while ago... but I know and You know - it never would...

    In fact, to uninstall the Trackpad++, you can simply roll back the HID-Compliant Mouse driver via Device Manager, this is a pretty straightforward procedure. You may also google to find more information on how to roll back the driver in Windows 7.

    If System Restore is not available, that means, your system had possibly been broken (better to say "sick") before you even started to install the software we are discussing there.

    P.S. If something works for thousands of people (and it does - watch the downloads number), but does not work for 1 or 2 people, then, please let me apologize, but the only reason I can imagine is that these people didn't follow the installation steps, or maybe they have had a broken Boot Camp before they started to install Power Plan Assistant and Trackpad++; maybe they did not install Power Plan Assistant with Macbook-specific options enabled during its setup; maybe they did not restart the Windows when asked; maybe they did not choose to accept the "red header" driver installation popup during the Trackpad++ setup, etc.

    Hi Vladimir,

    I have been using the former version of your driver under Win7 (32 bit) for many months and have been very (!!) satisfied. When looking at the updated version 1.4a I realized that it only works for 64bit Windows versions. Any chance to enjoy the benefits of the update for me as a 32bit user (other than entirely scrapping my 32bit Windows and update to 64bit)?

    Sad truth is still better than the sweet lie... So... no chances except of migrating to x64. Trackpad Plus Plus is now purely and entirely 64-bit. This is the future. This is today. It came.

    Nevertheless, the legacy 1.3a-x86 version will be available (on demand) for as long as someone really needs it. This version is not bad at all! It incorporates, I would say, 80% of what you get in the new version. In addition, by migrating to 64-bit architecture you slightly improve the overall performance of your Macbook, so I would recommend to migrate to just everybody. I think, 2GB of RAM which certain models ship with, could be the only "cons" issue. Otherwise, please consider going x64, thus getting maximum from your hardware and the ability to use the newest Trackpad Plus Plus as a bonus

    I too have been burned by these installs.  My System Restore isn't available for some reason.

    Then before you do anything else find out why such a basic and useful feature is non-functional, is it even turned on?

    Thanks for all the hard work on this.

    I have been reinstalling every week, and suddenly this week the behavior changed so now the scroll wheel on my Microsoft mouse only scrolls in one direction, no matter which way I turn the wheel.  This has always worked correctly before, and if I turn off Trackpad++ it works correctly.

    This is a big disappointment for me since I use both the mouse and trackpad as I work and need them both working.  What changed, and how do I get back to the old, correct behavior?

    Thanks!

    I've got a quick question.  I installed powerplan so that I could install trackpad++ but I don't really need the power management stuff.  I only have a few pieces of software that I use bootcamp for so always run it plugged in for windows.  The other 95% of the time I'm running Lion anyway.  So, question is:  from you instructions it said that powerplan was needed to allow the unsigned trackpad driver.  Now that that is installed, is it safe to uninstall powerplan so I won't get the update messages?

    thanks, the trackpad driver, IMO, is markedly better than stock so thanks for the work!

    Safe to uninstall the Power Plan Assistant. By the way: I suggest to contact the support email for quicker response.

    mwdelta: did you disconnect the mouse, as asked to, during the installation of the Trackpad++? Just a note, for wireless mice, disconnect = unplug receiver, not power off the mouse itself. Otherwise, in my opinion, there are no ways for the Trackpad++ to influence the 3rd party mouse. To restate, except of the case of not following the installation steps, i.e. having mouse not disconnected during the setup.

    ^FAIL^

    Explain to me how not having a funtioning trackpad makes anything easier. Or how spending hours fixing a problem caused by a "solution" makes anything easier.

    There should be a dislike button to express true concensus rather than sweeping the "nay" votes under the carpet as abstain.

    I, however, will take solace in the fact that an upward thumb is a signal from the Roman Emporer to kill the defeated gladiator rather than spare his life (downward thumb). In that context I express two thumbs up (with vigor).

    Exactly. Opera is the recommended browser for Boot Camp.

    Because, well, Trackpad++ 1.4a is optimized for Opera.

    Scrolling is smooth and as much Safari-like as possible.

    Enjoy

    P.S. Sad to hear a few people have run into issues... I do

    believe, they either have incompatible hardware, or didn't

    follow the installation steps in a strict way, or simply had

    a "broken" Windows 7 before dealing with Trackpad++...

    For example, a few people tried to use Trackpad++ with

    pre-unibody Macbook Pro, or even with Macbook (non-Pro).

    Some people didn't install PPA correctly (not in Macbook

    compatible mode), etc., etc. Some people even tried to

    install the 64-bit driver on 32-bit Windows 7 (!!!). And then

    they wrote, well, Trackpad++ is not working. Oh why?

    Hello Vladmir,

    How about the Windows 7 32 bit driver?

    Where can i download the package?

    I know it is "discontinued", but i would like to use it anyway, even the discontinued version.

    Please, contact me via e-mail.

    Thanks in advance.

    A big THANK YOU to Vladimir!

    After reading this thread I was compelled to post and report on my experience. I am running Win7 Pro 64 bit on a 3rd gen MacBook Air via Bootcamp.

    I followed the instructions and took the following steps:

    1. manually created a system restore point

    2. installed Power Plan assistant and restarted

    3. disconnected any USB mice / pointing devices

    4. installed Trackpad++

    EVERYTHING WORKED PERFECTLY. No problems installing, and a huge productivity improvement thanks to turning on the "when typing ignore all Trackpad Input" setting (before Trackpad ++ I was having problems with the cursor jumping to random positions while typing emails on the Air).

    After reconnecting my destop keyboard and mouse I found the mouse wheel scrolling was too slow, and I simply went into the "Mouse" control panel app, clicked on the "Wheel" tab, and increased the # lines per notch from 1 to 8. That worked like a charm.

    Hope that helps,

    -jsound

    Thanks. By the way, has anyone noticed that the dreams had come true?

    Trackpad Plus Plus now supports 3-finger swiping, and even 4-finger gestures (a-la good old Snow Leopard "Expose" feature).

    Also, the installation procedure has been simplified. You do NOT need to unplug the USB or Bluetooth mouse anymore.

    Hey Vladimir, this is a big leap in functionality thank you!

    The 3 and 4 finger gestures are great.

    Is it possible at all to customize the functionality of the 3 and 4-finger gestures now that they are available for trackpad ++ users? For example, if you wanted the 4-finger swipe DOWN to bring up the regular alt+tab function instead of flip 3D. Just curious. Not a major thing, I just know that some windows users find flip 3D to be a bit of a pain.

    One last question, you mentioned that adding 3+ finger gestures would require rewriting the HID stack, which it appears you are doing for this latest update. Does this mean we are closer to a more perfect "tap-drag" feature
