Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

You may visit http://trackpad.powerplan7.com for details.

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

Cheers, and enjoy Trackpad++, something Apple definitely have had to implement a while ago... but I know and You know - it never would...

    Hey Vladmir,

    As a matter of fact I think there was a conflict between a couple different processes happenign at once. I hadn't used Bootcamp for a long time, and it was trying to update several pieces of software at once ...

    Anyway, I'm sending a mail now.

    In any case: All I need is instructions about how to uninstall completey. Surely there's some way of pulling this off. Then I'll reinstall ...

    There we go -

    For the rest of you guys: The problem turned out to be connected to a system restore that put returned Windows to default settings for driver signature check. Vladmir has a prog to fix that on his site:

    http://www.powerplan7.com/Windows7 x64 SP1 Unsigned Drivers Fix.zip

    The gestures are a nice addition.

    Now if only there were a way to turn the sensitivity on the trackpad ... On my 2010 MBA the trackpad is so twitchy it'll sometimes decide I clicked on something with my finger about 2mm above the trackpad.

    But as I understand it, that's  located at a deeper programming level that Vladmir can't access.

    To be more precise, some Windows update was being installed SIMULTANEOUSLY with the Trackpad++.

    Mike, glad to hear everything is finally working, and that you like the new 3-finger and 4-finger gestures. In fact: it took me many months to enable them... Trackpad++ has become very complex software now, despite the GUI part is almost the same as in the initial version. Mike, I do hope to make the sensitivity slider available in the future. Again, it's the question of time...

    Regarding the fix Mike mentioned, please DO NOT RUN IT OR USE IT unless you have run into issues. Normally this fix is NOT required. In addition, to use this fix you have to copy BOTH OF THE FILES (the fix executable and its manifest) to C:\Program Files\PowerPlanAssistant, then run the fix from that same folder (C:\Program Files\PowerPlanAssistant), or it won't work at all.

    Conclusion: like I said before, if something is working for thousands of people, and not working for 2 or 3 people, those people have something wrong in their system, or they did not follow the installation procedure precisely. Or they have incompatible hardware. Yes, would you believe it, people are installing on, say, Early 2008 Macbook Pro, and then complaining. Dear all, please, read attentively what is written on the web site, in the readme. Then you will have everything working well, and you will really enjoy the new multitouch gestures, like others already do.

    P.S. Well, just a kind of announcement: in the very next release of the Trackpad++ (this week), 32-bit architecture will be supported again. So everyone will be able to get the swiping and other advanced multitouch goods working on x86!

    I understand the four finger up and four finger down gestures, but what are the three finger ones? I'm not seeing anything happen when I three finger swipe...

    thanks!

    Vertical 3-finger up / down thing stands for discrete zoom in / zoom out. This gesture works in many applications, including web-browsers and some image viewers.

    Here is the current 32-bit BETA (pretty stable, but... BETA):

    Please feel free to post just any feedback. This is highly appreciated...

    And, of course, use this test version at your own risk. No one is forcing you to install it.

    Vladimir,

    The beta installed smoothly on my Win 7 (SP 1) 32-bit machine - a mid 2010 MBP 13". First impression: Great! Will report promptly if I run into any problems in due course.

    Vladimir,

    Amazing job on the trackpad++ and also the powerplan assistant is great.

    Just one thing is missing for me, and would HELP alot, a middle click.

    I configured BetterTouchTool on OSX for 3 fingers tap to function as middle click,

    which is extremely useful when browsing and surfing the web.

    also, thumbs up for resupporting the 32 bit architecture... it was a life-saver, i thought bout reinstalling to 64bit because of you

    thanks again, greatly appriciated.

    Please tell us a short story, using the following pattern: "I have Mid 2009 Macbook Pro, Boot Camp 3.3; Power Plan Assistant is working just fine and is capable of disabling the keyboard backlight, because I have confirmed that this is a Macbook in the Power Plan Assistant post-installation dialog. Then I installed the latest build of Trackpad++". Something like this, please.

    Sorry for improper inquiry. Anyway my system is MBP13 (mid 2009). Previously I used to install trackpad++ in windows 7-32bit (I am not sure about which version but it was last year I think)

    Recently I just switched to SSD and reinstalled windows 7(64bits). I also installed vmware fusion 4 & parallel desktop 7 in lion to share bootcamp parttion in which it may mess up with bootcamp driver i think.

    So now it seems that the trackpad++ cannot communicate with bootcamp driver althought it seems my bootcamp driver (3.3) is working fine and trackpad++ always used CPU at 100% which made the system freezing.

    Any suggestion for this particular issue since I am really excited to hear that trackpad++ support 3 or 4 finger gesture. Thank.

    Oh dear, I'm really sorry, have to add this to FAQ: an issue is, Trackpad++ may not work if you shared the Boot Camp partition for usage with virtual machine under Mac OS X. But, of course, the Trackpad++ will work just fine if your Parallels or Fusion virtual machines in Mac OS X do not share the Boot Camp partition with "real" Windows 7.

    In order to remove the Trackpad++, you can simply roll back the mouse driver (in the Device Manager) to HID-Compliant Mouse and also revert Apple Multitiuch driver in the Human Interface Devices category to Boot Camp 3.3 driver in the same way.
